Mila is Italian for miracle, and in every way possible, that name fits the little girl that made her dramatic entrance into the world as a micro preemie weighing a little more than two pounds.
Here’s what happened: On Wednesday, October 15th, Gina and her husband, Nik, faced an unexpected and life-changing event. At just 26 weeks pregnant, Gina was admitted to the hospital due to health complications that placed both her and her baby in serious danger. Her medical team made the swift decision to perform an emergency C-section, ultimately saving both Gina’s and baby Mila’s lives. They remain profoundly grateful for the doctors and nurses whose quick actions ensured their safety.
Here's why they need our support: Baby Mila is now in the NICU receiving care. She will remain there for several months, and there is, at this moment, a likelihood that due to a brain bleed and other complications she faces not only a long road ahead, but the possibility of severe, life-limited disabilities.
Gina and Nik, like most expecting parents, have diligently saved time off for their respective paternity and maternity leave, but of course, no one can imagine the extraordinary circumstances they now find themselves facing. As a self-employed voice teacher, Gina does not have access to PTO, and Nik must weigh taking his PTO now to be at the hospital with the desire to do so in the future when Mila could be discharged. They also have two wonderful, young boys at home who need their mom and dad, too.
Let’s help them focus on the fight in front of them now, on appreciating the gift of every day they have with Mila, by removing some of the financial pressures of needing to return to work so soon.
Gina and Nik are Midwestern in every way it counts... hearty... self-reliant... would do anything to help someone in need. As their friends and family, all we can do is wrap our arms around them and help them show up to face this moment with dignity and love.
With love,
Their best friends and family.
