If you're a sailing soul, you probably know or have heard of Gillie Davies. She is a breathtakingly courageous woman, who has been solo sailing and circumnavigating for years on board her good ship Tuppenny while writing and creating soul-filled poetry. Gillie has a heart of true gold and she's inspired and given to so many. But right now, she's in a real battle with costs for cancer treatment. Even a strong, awesome solo sailor, needs help from time to time. And right now, we need to help this amazing woman with our support. Please donate as you can and share this fundraiser. Her cancer is a fast-growing sort and it's imperative she gets the funds quickly, so that when her surgical wounds heal by the end of January, she can start radiation treatment promptly.
Below is her story in her own words:
I am a 60 year old, solo sailing, world circumnavigating poet, living aboard my 40' sailing boat Tuppenny now for the past 14 years. I foster rescued cats when I'm able and right now, aside from Ziggy Furst Mate Stardust, a bi-coloured eyed white cat, I am caring for 3 others, until they can be neutered, vaccinated and found permanent loving homes here in Malaysia.
On 15th December, at anchor off Langkawi, Malaysia, I did my daily breast check - all clear. Next day I did it again and found a lump the size of a pea. It turned out to be growing fast and by the time I had the surgery to remove it 6 days later the lump measured 1.5cm - I had a highly aggressive form of breast cancer. The operation was successful but now I need a course of treatment to raise the likelihood of non-recurrence of cancer from 70% to 90% through radiotherapy and hormone therapy. Living the kind of single, freewheeling life I do, serious illness is a game changer. I thought of returning to the UK and the arms of the National Health Service but this is my life; the deep oceans, the wind in my face, my sailing community and the inspiration for my poetry, so I have decided to have the treatment here in Malaysia. This involves big changes.
I am normally at anchor, taking my little dinghy ashore for shopping and water, but due to the nature of the treatment, I will need to pay to be in a marina. I also have to pay for my treatment which will be ongoing for 5 years. I am drawing on some resources, but I have a shortfall of about £7,000. If you would like to support me and my choices, I would be very grateful. If you aren't able to gift money, perhaps a candle, lit for me, or your own form of prayer is possible. I am not a religious woman, but I do believe in the power of Kindness.
I have very active Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages where you can follow my story, I have a website (gilliesailssolo.co.uk) and my first book published in spring last year can be found here https://www.amazon.co.uk/Oceans-My-Soul-Sailing-South/dp/1795622601
Thank you for reading my story. Ziggy, Tuppenny and I are very grateful for your time and may the Oceans of your Soul forever be flowing, Gillie x
