My name is Gil, and I’m reaching out for help during an incredibly difficult time. In 2008, my siblings put my parents’ property in Oregon into a reverse mortgage and embezzled a large sum of money. My parents, who speak very little English, relied on me as their oldest child, but I’ve lived in Texas since 1991 and could only visit once a year. Because of the distance, I wasn’t fully aware of what was happening until the property was foreclosed. My mother was devastated, and I had to step in to help. In 2016, I took out a loan to pay off the reverse mortgage and keep my family from going homeless. By then, my father had passed away, never knowing what my siblings had done. Since then, I’ve been responsible for the property, paying taxes and never charging rent to my mother or brother, who lived there. My intent was always to protect my family, not to profit from them.
Now, I am retired at 76, living with diabetes, neuropathy, and other health issues. My wife and I rely on social security, and she helps care for our grandson. The financial strain has become overwhelming. I have an attorney handling my case, but the legal fees are high, and my siblings are suing me for a significant amount. We’ve had two court hearings dismissed in my favor, but the legal battle continues. I’ve taken out a HELOC loan on our home to cover these expenses, and the debt keeps growing. I am selling the Oregon property at a significant loss because my siblings put a restraining order on me, preventing repairs and updates. My main concerns are covering attorney fees, paying off the HELOC loan, and managing travel expenses between Texas and Oregon for court hearings and property matters.
I would like to thank those of you who are considering helping me out with this hurtful family issue. I’m not a person to ask for financial help, but at my age I have no other option. I am not a liability to my family or my country. I worked hard, and God has blessed me during my youth. Thank you lots, Gil.
