Help Gideon Get Top Surgery (FtM)

Update: My surgery is scheduled for December 22nd, 2022! Fortunately, my insurance is going to cover a big chunk of the cost. What I have raised so far and the money I have saved up will cover most of the cost, so any additional donations will go to continued gender care (hormones etc.). Hi there! My name is Gideon and I am fundraising for my top surgery (FtM double incision). I came out as transgender five years ago when I was 15 years old. This is me a few months after I started coming out to my friends. I didn't come out to my family until eight months after this photo was taken:

When I first came out to my parents, they were devastated and did not respond well at all. Since then my mum has been really trying to be supportive and almost always uses my correct name and pronouns. My dad is working on it. I work part-time and participate in research studies/clinical trials, but as a full-time university student, I am not able to earn enough to cover the costs of surgery.

After I graduate, it will be much harder to take the time off necessary to recover from surgery, so I am really hoping to get it done within the next year and a half.

 

So far I have been able to start testosterone, which I have been on since I turned 18, and get my name legally changed thanks to support from my church. I have wanted top surgery since before I came out, but it has never been possible financially. Our insurance would cover top surgery fees, but it works on a deductible system, meaning that we pay out of pocket for everything until we have spent a certain amount, at which point we pay 15% of all fees. Surgery has to be scheduled months in advance without knowing whether or not we will hit the deductible before the end of the year. I am hoping to schedule surgery for this summer or next winter when I have a break from classes.

I am also applying for a top surgery grant, so if I receive that, I will use money here to cover the fees that the grant doesn't cover (such as the hospital fees and anesthesia) and if any is left over, I will donate it back to Genderbands who sponsor the grants.
