Help Migrant Student Earn His Diploma!

One of our bright and kind students at Gloucester High School tragically lost his elder brother in a horrific migrant trailer accident in Chiapas two weeks ago. After a long wait, he was on his way to join his family in Massachusetts to move forward in a new country, united. Not only must he pay back the loan that his brother took out (against his family’s home) to make the fateful trip possible, he now carries the responsibility of financially providing for the family his big brother left behind. At just 16 years of age, he has been asked to step away from his studies and work full-time in order to attend to his new responsibilities; the lives of two young children left behind in Guatemala. With honor and bravery he faces this chilling reality. This young man is kind, thoughtful, unsurprisingly wise beyond his years and putting his best foot forward in a foreign world to master English and earn a diploma from GHS. He speaks Q’eqchi’ and Spanish and is learning English as his third language. Our society needs young people with the insight that this young man’s cultural experiences bring! We are so inspired by him. 

 

We have left his name out of this bio for protection as it is possible that this could draw unwanted attention to his family due to the tragic circumstances of the death. This young man is incredibly deserving of any help we can send his way. It is sufficiently unbearable to lose half of one’s heart and soul, without having to worry about throwing away any hope for an education. Our friend was waiting for his brother to arrive here in Gloucester after more than 3 years without having seen him when this tragic event occured. Let's come together to make sure that he can at least continue his studies, and not become simply another statistic.

Uno de nuestros brillantes y amables estudiantes de Gloucester High School ha perdido trágicamente a su hermano mayor en un horrible accidente de remolque de migrantes en Chiapas hace dos semanas.  Después de una larga espera, estaba en camino de unirse a su familia en Massachusetts para avanzar en un nuevo país, unidos. No solo debe devolver el préstamo que su hermano sacó (contra la casa de su familia) para hacer posible el fatídico viaje, ahora tiene la responsabilidad de mantener económicamente a la familia que dejó su hermano mayor. Con tan solo 16 años se le ha pedido que se aleje de sus estudios y trabaje a tiempo completo para atender sus nuevas responsabilidades; las vidas de dos niños pequeños que quedaron atrás en Guatemala. Con honor y valentía se enfrenta a esta escalofriante realidad. Este joven es amable, sabio para su edad y está dando lo mejor de sí mismo en un mundo extranjero para dominar el inglés y obtener un diploma de GHS. Habla Q'eqchi' y español, y está aprendiendo inglés como su tercer idioma. ¡Nuestra sociedad necesita a los jóvenes con la visión que aportan las experiencias culturales de este joven! Estamos muy inspirados por él.

 

Hemos dejado su nombre fuera de esta biografía para protegerlo, ya que es posible que esto pueda llamar la atención no deseada hacia su familia debido a las trágicas circunstancias de la muerte. Este joven es increíblemente merecedor de cualquier ayuda que podamos enviarle. Es suficientemente insoportable perder la mitad del corazón y el alma, sin tener que preocuparse por desperdiciar cualquier esperanza de educación. Nuestro amigo estaba esperando que su hermano llegara aquí a Gloucester después de más de 3 años sin haberlo visto cuando ocurrió este trágico evento. Unámonos para asegurarnos de que al menos pueda continuar sus estudios y no convertirse simplemente en una estadística más.
