Je m’appelle Ghassan Abu Ouda, j’ai 27 ans. Je vis actuellement dans une tente avec mes parents et mon frère dans le nord-ouest de Gaza. Avant le 7 octobre j’étais l’attaquant de l’équipe du Ittihad Shojaeyya. Je me souviens très bien de mon dernier match, sans doute l’un des plus beaux de notre début de saison. Nous jouions le 2 octobre 2023 face au Hilal Gaza au stade Yarmouk (depuis devenu un camp de réfugiés). J’ai inscrit lors de cette rencontre un doublé. À ce moment-là le club était premier au classement et j’étais le meilleur buteur de la ligue, une première dans ma carrière. J’étais dans la forme de ma vie. Je suis d’ailleurs le dernier joueur à avoir inscrit un but dans la bande de Gaza avant la suspension du championnat moins d’une semaine plus tard. Il n’y a plus de football à Gaza. La guerre m’a tout enlevé : mes rêves et mes espoirs de carrière.

Le 7 octobre, je me trouvais dans ma maison à Beit Hanoun, la ville la plus au nord de l’enclave. C’était une belle maison avec un beau petit jardin. L’occupation nous a dans un premier temps ordonné d’évacuer immédiatement la ville. Nous avons alors fui vers la ville de Jabaliya à pied. Pendant 6 kilomètres, nous avons marché sous les bombardements. C’était une journée particulièrement éprouvante. Lors des premiers déplacements j’ai perdu mon ami, l’international Palestinien Rashid Dabour avec qui j’avais joué une saison en 2017-2018 à Al-Ahli Beit Hanoun. Cette année-là nous étions parvenus à monter en première division. Nous étions tellement heureux ensemble. Il était plus qu’un ami ou coéquipier, il était comme un frère. Depuis le 7 octobre, beaucoup de joueurs de foot ont été assassinés. J’ai aussi rencontré une fille durant la guerre juste après la mort de son frère, un de mes meilleurs amis, dans un bombardement. C' est la plus belle chose qui me soit arrivée ces derniers mois. Je lui ai promis que lorsque la guerre cessera, je la marierai. La guerre et les déplacements nous ont malheureusement séparés depuis 3 mois. Maintenant elle vit dans le sud de la bande de Gaza, a Deir Al Balah. Au total nous avons été déplacés 4 fois, la dernière fois datant du 11 juillet 2025 où l’armée israélienne a annoncé qu’elle allait bombarder la zone où nous nous trouvions à Jabalia. Nous n’avons eu que 24 heures pour fuir. Actuellement, la vie est très difficile et obtenir de la nourriture et de l’eau l’est d’autant plus. Beaucoup de gens sont décédés en allant en chercher dans les sites de distribution alimentaire contrôlés par l’armée israélienne. J’ai perdu mes cousins Muhammad et Mahmoud Nidal Abu Odeh comme ça. Nous n’avons que très peu d'autres options. La nourriture et l’eau y sont très chers -le kilo de riz coûte 30$, celui de farine 40$- et nous attendons parfois des heures pour en obtenir des portions.

Le football était un exutoire pour nous à Gaza. C’est toute ma vie. Je suis fan de Manchester United, Barcelone et Alessandro Del Piero. J’aurais adoré jouer à ses côtés. Quand j’étais dans un camp près de la mer à Deir Al Balah, je m’entrainais tous les jours pendant une heure et demie sur la plage et je m'entretiens en allant nager. Un autre joueur et ami Haitham Faisal, s'entraînait régulièrement avec moi mais il a été blessé à la jambe et aujourd’hui a beaucoup de complications pour marcher. Personnellement j’ai aussi dû arrêter à cause de la malnutrition. Désormais, j'attends avec impatience la fin de la guerre pour quitter Gaza, poursuivre ma carrière et retrouver la fille que j’aime dont je suis séparé depuis bientôt deux ans. La situation dans la ville de Gaza est très mauvaise. Les dons nous permettraient à ma famille, mes proches et moi, d’améliorer nos conditions dans le camp et de partir de Gaza à la recherche d’un meilleur futur.

Ghassan's story

My name is Ghassan Abu Ouda, I am 27 years old. I currently live in a tent with my parents and my brother in the northwest of Gaza. Before October 7, I was the striker for the Ittihad Shojaeyya football team. I remember my last match very clearly — probably one of the best of our early season. We played on October 2, 2023, against Hilal Gaza at Yarmouk Stadium (which has since become a refugee camp). I scored twice during that game. At the time, our club was at the top of the league and I was the top scorer — a first in my career. I was in the best shape of my life. In fact, I am the last player to have scored a goal in the Gaza Strip before the championship was suspended less than a week later. Football no longer exists in Gaza. The war has taken everything from me — my dreams and my hopes for a career.

On October 7, I was at home in Beit Hanoun, the northernmost city of the enclave. It was a beautiful house with a small, lovely garden. The occupation forces first ordered us to evacuate the city immediately. We fled on foot to Jabaliya. We walked 6 kilometers under bombardment. It was a particularly harrowing day. During those early displacements, I lost my friend, Palestinian international player Rashid Dabour, with whom I played during the 2017–2018 season at Al-Ahli Beit Hanoun. That year, we managed to move up to the first division. We were so happy together. He was more than a friend or teammate — he was like a brother. Since October 7, many footballers have been killed. (According to Susan Shalabi, vice president of the Palestinian Football Association, nearly 440 footballers have been killed since October 7.)

I also met a girl during the war, just after her brother — one of my best friends — was killed in a bombing. She is the most beautiful thing that has happened to me in these past few months. I promised her that when the war ends, I will marry her. Sadly, the war and repeated displacements have separated us since 3 months. She now lives in the south of the Gaza Strip, at Deir Al Balah. We have been displaced four times in total, the most recent being on July 11, 2025, when the Israeli army announced it would bomb the area we were in, in Jabaliya. We had only 24 hours to flee. Life is extremely difficult now, and getting food and water is even harder. Many people have died trying to fetch supplies from the food distribution points controlled by the Israeli army. I lost my cousins, Muhammad and Mahmoud Nidal Abu Odeh, this way. We have very few other options. Food and water are extremely expensive — a kilo of rice costs $30, a kilo of flour $40 — and we sometimes wait hours just to get a small portion.

Football was an outlet for us in Gaza. It is my entire life. I’m a fan of Manchester United, Barcelona, and Alessandro Del Piero — I would have loved to play alongside him. When I was staying in a camp near the sea in Deir Al Balah, I used to train every day for an hour and a half on the beach, and I kept myself fit by swimming. Another player and friend, Haitham Faisal, used to train regularly with me, but he was injured in the leg and now has serious difficulties walking. Personally, I also had to stop due to malnutrition. Now, I’m looking forward to the end of the war so I can leave Gaza, continue my football career, and reunite with the girl I love — whom I’ve been separated from for nearly two years. The situation in Gaza City is terrible. Donations would help my family, my loved ones, and me improve our conditions in the camp and allow us to leave Gaza in search of a better future.
