"Why Can't Ghanim Play with Me?"
Ghanim's sister, Maria, often asks, "Why can't Ghanim play with me?" This simple question echoes the pain and confusion of a family deeply affected by medical and environmental hardships.
When Ghanim was born, his health was compromised by a lack of oxygen, which led to brain cell damage. From the beginning, his parents were desperate to provide him with the necessary care, but circumstances kept changing. The cost of medical treatments, especially brain scans and therapies, was overwhelming, and they often found themselves unable to afford even basic necessities. The medications, including injectables that required outside orders, drained their resources.
The family had to move frequently, from their home to a tent, then to a non-habitable house. Each time, they lost vital items: medical equipment, Ghanim’s specialized chair, and even essential documents. Every move brought a sense of instability and fear. Their home was destroyed in an attack, along with everything inside it, including Ghanim’s medical records. The constant upheaval created a cycle of stress and hardship.
Ghanim’s condition, as doctors noted, required careful and precise management. Many experts pointed out that his medications had been poorly adjusted over time. More than one doctor suggested that a specialist, experienced in his condition, should reassess Ghanim’s treatment regimen to ensure he receives the right medication in the right quantities. It was crucial to address this issue before his situation worsened.
For Ghanim to thrive, the family needs a comprehensive evaluation and an updated brain scan. His doctor had recommended a CT scan five years ago, but due to financial constraints, it was never performed. This diagnostic imaging, along with other specialized tests, will help determine the current stage of Ghanim’s brain degeneration and guide his treatment plan. With this, they can take steps to improve his health through the right medications and therapies.
Furthermore, Ghanim’s physical needs are extensive. He requires a specialized wheelchair, one tailored to his condition, as well as a nebulizer machine for respiratory support. The family relies heavily on diapers, which are essential for Ghanim’s care, and they are constantly purchasing medications for his asthma and allergies. A high-quality fish oil supplement is vital for his brain function, as well as a Swedish ball to help strengthen his spine and back. There’s also the potential need for brain surgery and regular oxygen sessions due to the lack of oxygen at birth.
Life in the tent was harsh, with extreme heat in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. The family struggled to protect Ghanim from the dangerous insects and the unsanitary conditions. The emotional toll on the parents was immense. They felt bound by their inability to provide Ghanim with the care he needed, especially with their limited resources and constant displacement.
The parents’ dream is to provide Ghanim with a stable and secure life where he can receive consistent medical care. They want to get back on their feet financially and be able to take Ghanim to a proper doctor who can adjust his medications and treatments accordingly. With the right support, Ghanim can have a chance at better health, potentially improving his condition through proper medical attention.
As a family, they are calling for help in securing the resources they need to care for Ghanim and to ensure that his future is brighter.
