Help Getting Brenda to Columbia University!

Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters,

Let me take you on a journey for the reason behind this fundraiser. Allow me to introduce you to the remarkable person asking for your support, love, and financial abundance.

Meet Brenda Ochoa, a woman with a heart as vast as her dreams. Brenda is the eldest of three children, yet her mother’s twin had another 3 children making her the caregiver of all 5 of her siblings and cousins. Growing up in West Seattle, Brenda was fortunate to experience a school environment rich in diversity and languages, a background she treasures deeply. A school led by principal Davy Muth, she knows the weight an impact this had on her childhood and is very grateful. In elementary school her leadership started to flourish, always being the most active girl in P.E. and running for school president in 5th grade led her to believe in herself and in her relationships with others.

Brenda's life has been a tapestry of duality, split between the vibrant culture of Mexico and the diverse communities of Seattle. This unique upbringing has blessed her with a deep connection to her roots but also left her with a sense of yearning, always feeling a part of herself is missing, no matter where she is.

Despite these challenges, Brenda's passion for learning has always shone through. People see in her what she sometimes cannot see in herself: a lifelong student with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and change.

During her time in Seattle, Brenda has led the initiatives on the San Juan Islands to support their Latino and Bilingual youth with programs in partnership with Camp Orkila and community non-profits that bring resources, mentorship and youth together to explore their options after high school. Her last two efforts consisted of an overnight spring camp experience at Camp Orkila and a College Field Trip from the San Juan Islands to the beautiful University of Washington and Columbia Basin College in Pasco. Brenda knows that although she is leaving for graduate school, these efforts will continue and the youth will co-create more programs and experiences the upcoming years.

With newfound inspiration, Brenda set her sights on graduate school, meticulously crafting her personal statement and gathering recommendation letters. Her dream destination? Teachers College, Columbia University. Yes, the school that is recognized for cultivating the best educators in the nation. Brenda reached out for support, guidance, and blessings from her ancestors, and the universe responded. She secured two significant scholarships, covering about two-thirds of her first-year tuition at Columbia.

Grateful for these blessings, Brenda now faces the practical challenges of relocating to New York City. She plans to drive across the country renting a U-haul carrying her most cherished belongings. Initially, she will stay in an Airbnb or hotel for a few weeks while she searches for a place that feels like home in the bustling city since this will be the first time she will learn about living there and planting roots.

Here’s how you can help Brenda on this incredible journey:

**Financial Support:** Any contribution, big or small, will help Brenda cover the costs of her move and initial living expenses in New York as well as the remaining tuition costs and medical fees.

**Connections in New York City:** If you know anyone in NYC who can offer guidance, show her around, host her, or simply be a friend and part of her support network, please reach out.

**Opportunities to Share Her Story:** Brenda is eager to inspire others through her experiences. If you have connections to radio shows, podcasts, TV programs, or newspapers, please help her find platforms to share her journey.

Brenda also wants to extend a heartfelt thank you to Rocio Carrion, whose journey and support have been a beacon of inspiration. Rocio paved the way, encouraged Brenda, and served as a role model, making this dream seem attainable.

Brenda’s story is one of resilience, passion, and an unwavering belief in the power of dreams. By supporting her, you're not just helping her achieve her goals; you're investing in a future educator who will touch countless lives and bring a unique perspective into the field of education. Thank you for being part of Brenda’s journey.

With love and gratitude,

Brenda Ochoa
