If you know Tamara Spence, you know she’s got the heart of a nurse, the soul of a comedian, and the coordination of a clumsy newborn giraffe. (No offense, Tam!) She’s spent her life taking care of others—patients, family, friends, and probably strangers in grocery store aisles. But right now, she’s the one who needs a little help (and maybe some bubble wrap going forward).
On the evening of July 22nd, Tamara had what can only be described as a very Tamara kind of accident. While leashing up her dogs to go potty, she got completely tangled in their chain and it literally snapped her leg. The official diagnosis? A comminuted tibial plateau fracture—which means her tibia shattered in multiple places. Ouch doesn’t quite cover it. The swelling has to go down before doctors can even operate, so surgery is tentatively planned for next Thursday.
The pain was so intense, Tamara couldn’t even walk—so in true resourceful (and slightly ridiculous) fashion, her ride to the car was a beach wagon. Yes, a beach wagon. It may not have been the most graceful ride, but it got the job done—and if nothing else, it gave her something to laugh about through the pain.
To make things even more difficult, Tamara had recently stepped away from work to be the full-time caregiver for her mother, who sadly passed away from cancer. She hadn’t yet returned to her full-time nursing position and doesn’t currently have health insurance. Just last month, she began working part-time with a local hospice agency—a job she’s absolutely loved—and was looking forward to doing the work she’s so passionate about.
Now, instead of jumping back into her calling, Tamara is facing major surgery, a long recovery, and weeks (maybe months) off her feet. Even in pain, she’s in good spirits and mostly focused on how soon she can get back to helping others. But realistically, she’ll need time—and support—to heal.
That’s where we come in. Any amount you’re able to give will go toward medical bills, living expenses, and recovery support. And if you can’t give financially, please consider sharing this post to help spread the word.
Let’s get Tamara back on her feet—literally. Thank you for all the love, laughter, and support!
