Hey, I’m Shea!
I am honored to be a member of the 2019 Women’s U24 National Ultimate team and I am headed to the Ultimate World Championships in Germany this summer. I will be playing alongside my 23 other incredible teammates, supported by phenomenal coaches and team support staff. This opportunity does not come without a large financial sacrifice however. The tournament is hosted in Heidelberg, Germany from July 13th-20th. Between flights to training camps, flights to the tournament, lodging, player fees, and other expenses, the cost of playing is around $2,500 - $3,200 and I need your help.
What this opportunity means to me
After tearing both of my ACLs in back to back seasons (2015 & 2016), I thought my chances of playing elite ultimate were over. Two years of physical therapy later and with an unbelievable amount of support from my friends, family, and teammates, I was able to recover and am stronger than I have ever been before. I submitted my tryout application with low expectations, but was notified that I had been invited to the tryout process. I was asked to attend a two-day intensive tryout in California and was later selected from 100 other women's eligible players who tried out to be a part of the team. Making this team is the pinnacle of years of work and recovery that I have dedicated to this sport. I am honored and humbled to be able to represent my country playing the sport that means so much to me.
Why Ultimate?
I grew up playing competitive soccer and basketball throughout high school. When I decided not to continue playing in college, I found myself missing my teams and teammates and quickly sought out opportunities to find a new community. I signed up for about 8 different club sports my first week at Portland State University, but after my first practice with the Ultimate team, I knew I’d found exactly what I was looking for. Ultimate is a unique sport that facilitates spirited play , gender equity , and genuine respect for yourself, your teammates, and your opponents. It has helped me become a better athlete and a better person. I use the lessons I have learned on the field in my everyday life, from my work ethic to my ability to resolve conflict. I met most of my closest friends through Ultimate and my favorite memories in the past 5 years have come from this community, both on and off the field. I started playing for the sport, but I continue to stay for the people and culture of Ultimate.
