Help get Michael to the Paralympics and beyond
Michael's main targets are to get to the Paralympic Games and the World equestrian Championships.
Due to the impact Covid-19 has had globally on all social and sporting events, many of you will know that the scheduled 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games in Tokyo have now been postponed to 2021.
As a result of this, Michael now needs to fund another year to reach the Paralympic games, which will cost in the region of £83,000 from September 2020 to September 2021. This also does not include the additional costs of Tokyo. If, however, we can manage to purchase a horse box, we can bring that figure down to £57,000! Target goal = £40,000
Reaching the Olympics and/or the Paralympic games is one of the greatest achievements any athlete could ever dream of and with Michael being on track, it would be a huge shame if Covid-19 were to put a stop to it for Michael.
If anyone would like to help with fundraising for Michael, please give Michael a private message on his Facebook page Michael Murphy Dressage or send a private message to Adam Goh on AG Sports Therapy & Personal Training
Below is the breakdown of where the money goes and how it will help Michael:
The price of keeping the horses for this year = £24,000
» It costs £1,000 a month to keep and maintain one horse = £12,000 a year
However, to compete at this level, two horses are required.
» The total cost of keeping and maintaining two horses equals out to be £24,000 a year
The price of training, maintenance and competing the horses = £59,000
» To continue the up and coming lessons, local shows, GB internationals competitions and the competitions abroad, it will cost an additional £59,000. Michael has currently got a number of great sponsorships who supply him with his equipment and gear.
Keeping the horses = £24,000
Maintenance and completion costs combined = £59,000
Grand total = £83,000
If however, we can manage to get a horse-box, we will make SAVINGS of £33,010,
bringing the grand total down to £57,000!
What is a Horse-box with adapted living space? Cost = £160,000
At the moment, Michael and his team are spending a lot of money to simply transport his horses to and from training stables and competitions whilst also having to pay for accommodation for themselves. A horse-box will save approx. £33,010 each year as the lorry works both as transport for both Mike and his horse, but also accommodation for Michael (Tailored to his physical needs).
We are aware it is a lot of money, so we are kindly asking for your support and donations in any way possible to help Michael achieve this amazing journey.
Who is Michael Murphy?
Michael Murphy is a 23 year old young man who was born with a rare neurological degenerative disorder called Dejerine-Sottas. As a result, he now has very limited sensation and movement in his arms and legs, which results in having no saving reactions, very little muscular strength and as a result of having a double spinal fusion, he now has a metal rod alongside his spine. He has limited mobility and is reliant on his wheelchair to be independent.
He is an aspiring Para Dressage Rider who is a member of Team Ireland and is on course to compete in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. However, Dressage is an extremely financially demanding sport and as such, he needs substantial funding to make this a reality.
Michael is a strong, focused and determined young man who is extremely inspirational. He has never let his disability stop him from achieving, which is evident as he is currently entering his final year at Warwick University studying Biology in addition to being a team member & competitor for Team Ireland in Para Dressage.
Why are we fundraising?
We are inspired to help Michael achieve his goal of getting to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. His older brother, James, who tragically passed away in an accident, nearly 5 years ago, was our very close friend since schooldays. Seeing Michael grow up and deal with his disability and loss of his brother, we have witnessed first hand the strength, commitment and desire he has to live life to the full.
How have we fundraised so far?
To raise money, Adam Goh, Joshua Molina and Nathan Molina challenged themselves physically by completing two demanding activities in September - the National Three Peaks Challenge within 24 hours, and two weeks later, the Full Tough Mudder where Nathan Goh and Michael's younger brother, Patrick Murphy also took part.
We are delighted to say we successfully completed the Three Peaks Challenge within a time of 22 hours and 58 minutes and successfully completed the Tough Mudder! We managed to raise over our £3,000 target which is a great start. Raising this amount helped Michael attend his competition in Ireland, in which he performed very well and medalled.
What is the National Three Peaks Challenge & Tough Mudder?
The National Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike) and Wales (Snowdon) all within 24 hours. The total walking distance is 23 miles (37km) and the total ascent is 3064 metres (10,052ft).
Tough Mudder is a 10-mile, 20+ obstacle mud course designed to test physical strength, stamina, mental grit and teamwork.
How you can help Michael get to Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games
Substantial funding is required for Michael to attend & compete in Internationals in order to qualify for his Paralympic goal. Please give as you are able, to support this inspirational athlete. All donations, regardless of size, are highly appreciated and will have a huge impact on his life.
