Help Get Matt Back on his Feet
Donation protected
For those of you who know Matt Lakey, you know he is always the first person to lend a hand, help out his community, or volunteer for literally anything.
For the almost 5 years I’ve coached him in weightlifting, he’s donated equipment to MWBC, cooked our BBQs for events and parties, driven down from Bendigo to help load at our competitions, fixed up equipment at the gym without being asked, and is always ready to have a chat and crack a joke with people around him.
You may not be aware, but this weekend during his third snatch in his weightlifting competition, Matt sustained a serious knee injury, which will require surgery and a long period of being immobilised. This means a lot of time off work and difficulty moving his knee. For someone who runs their own small business, this brings a lot of extra stress, worry, and the challenge of dealing with rehab, pain, and navigating all the post-surgery medical hurdles.
For someone who has given so much to MWBC, the wider weightlifting community, and sports in general (he’s always telling me how he’s down at the footy club helping, or coaching, and the same goes for the cricket club), I can’t help but think that there are people from all walks of his life—friends and acquaintances—who would love to give back and support him, just as he’s contributed so much.
I know he’s going to be really mad at me for setting this up because he’s not one to ever ask for help or support, but if you have the means to donate to his recovery, ease any financial burden from being off work, or simply send a well wish, I know deep down he will truly appreciate it.
Get well soon, Matt!
