Help get Lucy pain free.

Meet Lucy, she is a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog, and she’s almost 4 months old now. At 13 weeks old, Lucy was stricken with sudden-onset pain, limping, lethargy, and eventually the inability to bear weight on any of her legs.

She has been diagnosed with Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy (HOD), a very painful bone disease. Lucy’s right front leg appears to be permanently damaged from the condition and isn’t growing at the same rate as her other limbs. She will require at least one, possibly two surgeries to correct and help lengthen her arm.

Surgery is estimated to be between $6,000 and $10,000 just the one time, doubling if she needs it twice. Lucy is on pain and anti-inflammatory medication around the clock and will need these meds until she’s done growing, around 1 year of age.

Lucy has a wonderful mother and two great brothers, and as you can imagine, nobody expects such a rare condition would happen and inflict such financial burden all within the first year of life.

Lucy would be expected to live a generally normal life once she has reached full grown. In the meantime, Lucy could also benefit from aquatic therapy to help strengthen her muscles and build bone mass. She’s currently underweight by about 10 lbs. If anyone knows of an indoor pool that would allow her to swim, that would be helpful too!
