Hi. Some of you know but most of you may not. On my last birthday, November 2021, Mom had to go in for a not so routine ultrasound of what we thought was just gallstones. The ultrasound did reveal some gallstones but much more than that. Two days later she was admitted to Good Sam where they performed an emergency MRI and a Paracentesis. The MRI confirmed our worst fears.
Mom currently has three inoperable tumors on her liver. The largest being over 12 centimeters. The official diagnosis is Stage IV Metastatic Liver Cancer. Word to the wise, do not Google it. We've done that and the results aren't promising.
She started chemotherapy this past December and is responding well. With this particular cocktail of chemo, the biggest side effect is a drop in her white blood cells. This makes her even more immunocompromised and even more susceptible to infection. The good news, Fred Hutch has developed a drug (GCSF) that will help her body replace the white blood cells the chemo destroys. After receiving just one dose of this drug, her white blood cells increased by 50%. Now the bad news. The next week the insurance company decided they were no longer going to cover this particular drug UNLESS she were to reduce the dosage of the chemo that is fighting her cancer. That leaves us with two options. Lower the dose of chemo and let the cancer take over sooner (which the insurance company would prefer to happen) or have her stay on her current dose of chemo and have her white blood cells remain at an all-time low.
Without the coverage from the insurance company, we realize we're going to have to do this on our own. We're going into this fight with one arm tied behind our backs without it. Mom is a fighter, and she isn't giving up anytime soon. She's got this and we've got her, but we need help. All the prayers, thoughts, vibes so far have been amazing and so appreciative. It truly helps keep spirits up to know so many have us in their thoughts. We want to thank you for the continued support and even if you can't donate, sharing and spreading Mom's story would be just as amazing.
