Video transcript:

My name is Kristina Mah. I’m the 2010 Karate World Champion, silver medalist at the World Combat Games, multiple time Premier League medalist, multiple time and current Oceania and Australian Champion. I’m a 5th Dan Black Belt in Go-Ju Ryu karate under my coach, 9th Dan Hanshi George Barounis at Miyagi Kan Karate in Sydney, and I’m an artist and PhD candidate at the Design Lab at the University of Sydney.

I started karate when I was 9 years old. My mother wanted me to learn karate to defend myself and also direct all the energy I had when I was little and train some discipline in me. For most of my life, I have found myself constantly balancing work, study, training and competing.

This year, I have been selected to compete at the 25th WKF World Karate Championships that will be held in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates in November. It is an incredible honour to be part of the Australian Karate Team and represent my country at the pinnacle event of the sport.

Since returning from the Olympic Qualifier in Paris in mid-June, I have continued my preparation for the World Championships throughout the Sydney lockdown.

I am giving everything I have to preparing for these World Championships.

This year, it is especially challenging. Unfortunately, this tour will be self-funded, without direct financial support from sporting bodies. But it hasn’t dampened my spirit and enthusiasm about the journey.

In all my years of international competition, this is the first crowd-funding campaign I’ve posted for myself. It speaks as a sign of these strange and unique times we find ourselves in.

I am reaching out to you to ask you for your support. Any contribution - no matter how big or small, will help me with the journey of representing Australia at these Championships. It’s hard to ask for financial support, and I wouldn’t do so if I didn’t really need a little bit of help to kick this goal.

If you are still watching this video, thank you for listening to a bit of my story and if you decide to donate something towards helping along my journey, I would be grateful beyond words.

I hope that through representing Australia and my club, Miyagi Kan at this 25th WKF World Championships, I can inspire people, especially karate-ka of all ages to never give up on their dreams, to dedicate themselves to continuous learning and development and to rise up and be brave to walk your own path.
