Hello all! I am Jenny of Jenny Webb Handmade and I started a pottery business last year. I am the owner operator and absolutely love what I do. The kiln I currently have is a 30+ year old Skutt KM1027. She has been a workhorse, but has quite a few issues.
First, the kiln bricks are falling apart, and literally crumbling off every time I fire. This brick crumbling is making it so the elements (which I just replaced last year) are falling out of their channels. Also, the rust on the outside is getting out of hand. See photos below.
Second, the kiln itself is a manual kiln. What does that mean? Well, every time I fire, which is about 2-3 times a month, I have to continuously set hour long timers, check the temperature and cannot leave it unattended AT ALL for about 9-10 hours. It’s a lot.
With your kind donations, I am going to get a newer model of the same Skutt kiln. This newer model is automatic, meaning I can set the ramp schedule and it will do its thing. More importantly, it won’t be falling apart. This will allow me to keep my business going, because without a properly working kiln, there is no Jenny Webb Handmade.
