I am trying to raise funds to get my son George a private ADHD diagnosis. George is almost 14 and year 9 at school, he is really struggling and every single day is hard for him. He urgently needs a diagnosis so that he is able to get the help, understanding and medication that he so deserves. His school agree that it is very clear that he does have ADHD and we are currently on the journey of getting him assessed through the NHS - the trouble with this is that Children's Mental Health Services (CAMHS) are over stretched and it will be at least another 18-24 months until a diagnosis would come through - George cannot wait that long, he probably will of left school by then.
£2000 will pay for him to be assessed, diagnosed and for the 1st 3 months of medication (you have to buy it privately for that amount of time if your diagnosis is done privately) and all consultations - It would take approx 3 months from start to finish!
ADHD does not just mean that he is hyper active - George struggles with being able to concentrate, understand his learning, organisation and many other things. In a recent meeting at school, they commented that for him to just stay in class and focus is using up more than double the effort that other students put into their learning (and that is just for him to focus, not even begin learning!) It is really affecting his self esteem - he thinks he is 'rubbish' at everything and every day is a battle to get him into school because in his words 'I'm just going to get in trouble all day' .
He is a lovely, kind, intelligent boy and I know that this diagnosis would completely change his life - as well as getting him access to medication, it would also get him much more help and understanding at school (teachers would be told and wouldn't just see him as badly behaved) but most importantly, he would be able to better understand why he thinks/behaves as he does and learn how to manage it.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.
