Help Andy Get Back on a Bike Again!
Donation protected
Nearly two years ago, chiropractor and top ranked BMX racer, Andy Zirzow, experienced a tragic and life-changing cervical fracture from a bike accident. He has made great strides but continues to face incredibly daunting physical, mental and emotional challenges every day. His life is consumed with strenuous physical therapy that takes every ounce of his determination, motivation and stamina each and every appointment. We applaud his amazing progress in his rehabilitation.
Now that his rehab progress is beginning to plateau, he is left with continuous pain, partial paralysis on his left side, and his dominant left hand is not functional. He can only walk very short distances with a cane and assistive devices (thanks to the Bioness electronic device purchased with previous donations) for his foot drop. Despite these devices, he still struggles with mobility even in a chair because his paralysis and weakness make it difficult to push himself around on anything except fairly flat surfaces. Understandably, Andy has been struggling with finding meaning in his life and feels he has just been surviving and existing the last two years.
We want to help Andy transition to the next step of his rehab where he can carve out a new, fulfilling and meaningful life for himself. Biking has always transported Andy to his “happy place.” Being outside and moving is a basic need for Andy’s soul to bring him true joy. He has had the opportunity to try different handcycles at his intense therapy retreats, which he has thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunately insurance does not cover any of the cost for this crucial piece of equipment that will help him maintain and build strength and improve his quality of life. He hopes to use a handbike to increase his stamina so he can one day volunteer and possibly gain part time employment to help provide for his family.
Please help us make this dream come true for Andy by making a donation in any amount to purchase a handcycle and transportation equipment. This bike will be safe, stable and fitted to Andy’s specific disabilities. With this handbike, he may have the opportunity to enjoy a competitive spirit again by participating in local games. This would allow him to start to work through the isolation and very taxing psychological aspect of his healing process, which has been the hardest thing for him to overcome. We truly appreciate everyone who has donated in the past to help Andy, and we would be so grateful if you can help once more so we can purchase a handbike to enrich his life. Thank you!
