On the 15th of May near Loanhead, 75-year-old Gerry was walking his beloved wee dog Max — a small but mighty one-year-old — when they were suddenly and violently attacked.
While out on their usual stroll, they encountered another dog walker with a large muzzled dog on a lead. Despite Max clearly shying away, the owner encouraged his big dog to approach. Shockingly, he loosened the lead, allowing the large dog to reach Max, grab him under the chin, and crush him between its chin and chest.
The poorly fitted muzzle popped off, and what followed was horrifying — the big dog began mauling Max, rag-dolling him before tossing him aside. In the chaos, Gerry was also knocked to the ground.
A truly wonderful bystander, a complete stranger, put herself in harm’s way to rescue Max and photograph the man as he calmly walked away with his dog — offering no help, no apology, and no remorse. This amazing woman then helped Gerry to his feet, got him and Max to the vet in her husband’s car, and continued to check in afterward. We are so deeply grateful for her kindness and bravery.

Max’s Recovery
Max suffered devastating injuries:
• A broken shoulder
• Torn muscles ripped from shattered bone
• Multiple deep lacerations
• A serious infection after surgery
He spent two weeks in the veterinary hospital undergoing MRI scans, two surgeries, and complex reconstructive procedures. Against the odds, his spirit is strong. His prognosis is excellent — he’s already eager to run and play again (though he’s under strict orders not to!).

The Financial Reality
The total bill is over £10,500. Thankfully, Gerry’s pet insurance and some additional funding from the veterinary hospital have helped greatly.
However, there’s still £2,500 outstanding.
The hospital has kindly offered a 12-month payment plan, but for a pensioner who has been through so much trauma, it’s still a big financial weight to carry.

Why We’re Asking for Help
Gerry would never ask for help himself. But many of you have kindly reached out, asking what you can do. So we’ve set up this GoFundMe to try to lift that final financial burden.
To us, Max is more than just a dog — he’s Gerry’s constant companion, his lifeline. The joy on Gerry’s face since Max returned home is impossible to describe.
If you’re able to contribute anything at all, it would mean the world. Your support will go directly towards paying the remaining vet bills and giving Gerry the peace of mind to focus on what truly matters: Max’s healing, and the time they can now spend together.
Thank you so much for reading, sharing, and supporting.
