Gerald Smith, my husband, has been bravely battling liver disease for the past five years. During this time, he has been unable to work, and our family has faced mounting medical expenses. Despite his strength and resilience, Gerald’s health has taken a turn for the worse. Complications from liver disease, diabetes, and other health factors have led to a diagnosis of liver cancer. Now, he urgently needs treatment to prevent the cancer from spreading while he awaits a life-saving liver transplant. The financial burden of ongoing treatments, hospital visits, and medications has been overwhelming. We are grateful for the care Gerald receives at Duke Hospital, but the costs associated with cancer treatment, the transplant itself, and the required housing near the hospital after surgery are far beyond what we can manage alone.
