Hello,
My name is Ian and I've been Gerald's pigeon parent since he was abandoned by his parents as just a fledgling. Over the past 3 years, Gerald has brought me and countless others so much joy and has been the best pet companion a person could ever ask for. Every day, from the moment I step into the room he is always on my shoulder, preening my hand, and coo-ing nonstop until he gets head scratches. He is extremely social, sweet to visitors and, after being featured in the viral video Cat's with Wings, has become a bit of a local celebrity.
Unfortunately, his life is at risk of being cut short by a growth in his neck, diagnosed as xanthomas, continuing to grow and drastically impact his quality of life. While not initially fatal, xanthomas can continue to grow until ulcerated, leading to bleeding spells and infection. Not wanting to put him through the stress of surgery, me and his primary veterinarian have tried everything from supplements, diet changes, and routine exercise to reduce the progression of the growth all to no avail. It has progressed to the point it is severely impacting his quality of life and I am now forced to choose between surgery and euthanasia. The estimate of this surgery is upwards of $2400, an amount I unfortunately do not have on hand and, faced with a now-ticking time clock, I will likely not have enough time to save up for. If anyone is able to assist in donation to help cover the costs of his surgery, it would be greatly appreciated.
