Genesis and her two children, ages 11 and 4, are struggling to stay afloat and meet their basic needs after her husband (the primary breadwinner of the family) was suddenly detained by ICE a few weeks ago. He had no criminal history and was driving at the time when he was stopped and grabbed by agents in a McDonalds parking lot. He was not questioned nor presented with a warrant, just swept away as so many have been recently.

Their family story is one of perserverance and years of searching for safety. Genesis and her family originally left their home country due to harsh conditions under a dictatorship. She had served in the military there and so was under intense pressure to comply. The family first fled to Ecuador, where her youngest was born and tried to make a go of it. Unfortunately there they also encountered instability and unsafe conditions, so returned home. When the fear and danger became too great, they set off for the US. Their family applied for asylum and had been waiting over two years for their first court date when her husband was taken. He was first moved to Tacoma, and then swiftly transferred far away to a detention center in New Mexico where he now awaits a hearing.

Genesis currently works limited hours at a recycling center sorting containers from the green bags we use locally. Her hours were recently cut due to declining demand. She is in the process of moving to a smaller apartment to try to reduce costs but it’s not enough to cover rent, utilities, food, and other household needs.
