Genesis is 8 years old.

For months, she lived with ongoing pain that no one could quite explain. After countless appointments and uncertainty, her family finally received an answer no parent ever wants to hear: Genesis has a tumor on her spine.

Since then, life has completely changed.

Her family has been traveling back and forth from Des Moines to Iowa City for specialist appointments, tests, and care. The cost of gas, medical bills, and time away from work has added up quickly, but they have continued to show up for Genesis every step of the way.

Recently, Genesis underwent a major surgery to remove the tumor. The procedure was successful, but it was extensive. Surgeons had to remove bone and place hardware in her spine to reach the tumor.

Now begins a long and difficult road to recovery.

Genesis is currently in significant pain and is beginning the process of learning how to walk again. She will need ongoing physical therapy and continued trips to Iowa City for follow-up care.

This journey doesn’t just affect Genesis.

She is one of five children, including a newborn baby girl. Her 3-year-old brother has autism and requires regular therapy and appointments as well. Before all of this, both parents were working hard to support their family. But as Genesis’s condition worsened and she missed months of school, her mom made the difficult decision to leave her job to care for the growing medical needs at home.

Now, the financial strain is overwhelming.

They are behind on rent and struggling to keep up with everyday bills, all while navigating medical expenses and travel costs. On top of that, the frequent trips to Iowa City have made it clear that they need a more reliable vehicle to safely get Genesis to the care she needs.

Genesis tiene 8 años.

Durante meses, vivió con un dolor constante que nadie podía explicar. Después de innumerables citas médicas e incertidumbre, su familia finalmente recibió una respuesta que ningún padre quiere escuchar: Genesis tiene un tumor en la columna vertebral.

Desde entonces, la vida ha cambiado por completo.

Su familia ha estado viajando constantemente de Des Moines a Iowa City para citas con especialistas, exámenes y tratamientos. El costo de la gasolina, las facturas médicas y el tiempo sin trabajar se ha acumulado rápidamente, pero aun así han estado presentes para Genesis en cada paso del camino.

Recientemente, Genesis fue sometida a una cirugía mayor para extirpar el tumor. El procedimiento fue exitoso, pero muy complejo. Los cirujanos tuvieron que remover hueso y colocar placas en su columna para poder llegar al tumor.

Ahora comienza un camino largo y difícil de recuperación.

Genesis actualmente tiene mucho dolor y está comenzando el proceso de aprender a caminar nuevamente. Necesitará terapia física continua y más viajes a Iowa City para su seguimiento médico.

Esta situación no solo afecta a Genesis.

Ella es una de cinco hijos, incluyendo una bebé recién nacida. Su hermano de 3 años ha sido diagnosticado con autismo y también necesita terapia y citas médicas constantes. Antes de todo esto, ambos padres trabajaban para sostener a su familia. Pero cuando la condición de Genesis empeoró y dejó de asistir a la escuela por meses, su mamá tomó la difícil decisión de dejar su trabajo para cuidar las crecientes necesidades médicas de sus hijos.
