My name is Gema Quetzal Cardenas, I am a sophomore at Life Academy High School in Oakland. Recently, I have been accepted to the ACLU Summer Institute that will take place at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. The ACLU Summer Institute will give me the opportunity to participate in mock trials, debate, and engage in conversations around grassroot organizing. Part of the institute will be giving me the opportunity of meeting with congressional staff.
I want to become a lawyer in civil liberties and run for office at the state level. With the intention of one day becoming a representative of California in Washington D.C. This experience will put me in a position of understanding how the system works and get a glimpse of my future career. With the support of others I will be able to complete my goal of representing the Oakland community in a positive way.
This money will be used to pay for travel and tuition fee that will provide meal money and housing.
I appreciate all those who support me throughout this process. Thank you!
