I'm writing this on behalf of my best friend Gem, in hopes that we can all join together to support her financially as she deals with major health issues that need treatment. Ever since I've known Gem, they've always been the type of person to put others before herself, and to work 3-5 different jobs just to get by. They've also ended up in hospitals more times than I can count. I think it's high time we help Gem put herself first, and get the help she needs and deserves.
What happened?
In the last year, Gem has got a herniated disc pushing on a nerve. This caused a lot of pain, adding on to Gem's already long list of other medical issues and symptoms. The first treatment Gem received was an epidural, which only numbed the area. But it simply is not enough for a proper recovery.
What does Gem need?
To properly recover, Gem needs to undertake spinal physio. The treatment must start as soon as possible, while Gem is not under as much pain as before. However, Gem needs to have specialized physiotherapy for spinal alignment, kinaesthesia, and back strengthening/stability. Indeed, Gem was recently diagnosed with Ehler Danlos syndrome and only specialist physio could help her recover while keeping her from getting more injured through this process.
Why am I making this fundraiser?
Physio is already expensive as it is, but specialist physio... Well, it's not something a 24-year-old already working several jobs each month to survive living in London can afford on her own.
Gem has found a qualified physio with more "accessible" rates. This would cost £2-3K depending on how well the treatment works. Gem wanted this GFM to ask for £1K only, as they would "pick up loads of extra shifts and continue working 3 jobs to make the rest."(Gem's words.) Any reasonable person would understand that this would be highly irresponsible. So I've decided to set £3K as a goal, to try and fund the entire road to Gem's recovery.
It's taken a lot of courage for Gem to even let me post this on her behalf. I know there's many of us that care about and want only the best for Gem. I know times are rough but a little truly goes a long way. I will be forever grateful to anyone who chips in and helps my friend finally get the treatment they need and the pain relief they deserve.
Thank you,
Leïla M
P.S. To any rich person seeing this : feel free to donate £1M to go towards organizing accessible concert fundraisers for anyone that needs specialist private medical care that they can't afford xo (Gem's special request)
