Since its inception in February 2011, Hummingbird House Foundation has desired to see the synergies of individuals and organisations working together to meet the needs of disadvantaged children in their communities of Queensland and Australia. As a result, the Hummingbird House Foundation identified a critical need to care for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families.
This provides a home away from home option that allows families to access respite and hospice care when home or hospital care can no longer meet their needs. Hummingbird House Brisbane is the inaugural project of Hummingbird House Foundation, with construction completed in June 2016. With Wesley Mission Queensland as the operating partner, Hummingbird House Brisbane is situated in Chermside, Queensland. Hummingbird House includes 24/7 respite care including physician and nursing support, pain and symptom management, and end-of-life care. Hummingbird House Foundation continually aspires for Hummingbird House to be a facility that is an Australian leader in paediatric palliative care sharing knowledge, expertise and research regionally, nationally and internationally to assist in the further development of best practices in this field. Now opened, it offers a comprehensive continuum of care to children and teens with life-limiting illnesses and their families throughout Queensland. It is unique within Queensland, as it offers best-practice paediatric palliative care within a home-like environment. Hummingbird House provides comfortable surroundings, personalized programs, caring professional staff and dedicated volunteers, to best support children and their families. Individual programs are designed to meet the needs of each family through all stages of a child’s illness. Hummingbird House Foundation recognises that through Hummingbird House, all children deserve the opportunity to learn, develop and grow no matter whether their lives are measured in days, weeks, months or years.
