Help Gary catch his breath
Donation protected
I am requesting financial assistance through “Go Fund Me” to help me fight an extremely rare genetic disease. I was born with a chromosomal disorder which caused architectural dysfunctions that prevent my body from taking in a sufficient amount of oxygen. It causes me to choke and stop breathing. My oxygen intake is less than one-third the required amount. Unfortunately I have suffered with this all my life and was told when I grow older this disease will progress.
Doctors have misdiagnosed my condition and prescribed the wrong medications most of my life which led to the deterioration of the optic nerve and becoming legally blind.
I have also had 33 procedures on my right leg and 5 on my left leg in order to retain these limbs after multiple DVT’s (blood clots) caused by doctors error relative to my rare diagnosis.
I’m also receiving treatment for a blood cancer, polycythemia, caused by lack of oxygen in the blood. I often experience severe cramping, extreme muscle pain and fatigue, and as a result have become extremely mobility impaired.
To make things worse, a recent injury caused one of my lungs to stop functioning.
Insurance does not cover a lot of my medical needs and pharmaceuticals. Nor does it cover my transportation needs to and from medical care. The minimal amount I receive from Social Security disability does not nearly cover my expenses to keep a roof over my head, gas in my vehicle, or put food on my table.
For example, just last week I could not afford to purchase a non-covered prescription for pain. I have not been able to purchase my compression stockings for more than a year. They are used to help prevent blood clots in my legs and need to be replaced every 4 months; last replaced July 2018. I only own one pair which are very worn out. I recently was prescribed some equipment to assist my breathing, but because I could not place a deposit on it, I was unable to have access to it. I have run out of prescribed/non-covered supplements and vitamins for several months and have not been able to replenish them due to cost. I have been cutting back on running the A/C which I require for my breathing, due to costs. I can not afford repair on my mobility scooter which does not work. My doctors have prescribed and insist on me getting another service dog, however I cannot afford to obtain one or care for it. Of course there are loads of medical bills that remain unpaid. Some caregivers have refused to provide me care until they are paid.
For me these costs are simply unreachable and are, quite frankly, overwhelming.
The lung and diaphragm injury has caused severe physical pain and has further decreased my ability to breath.
UCLA has two surgeons that can repair my phrenic nerve damage, paralyzed diaphragm and lung. This is the only place the repair is performed. The costs and travel expenses are the next biggest question of concern.
With your assistance I could better afford the medical supplies and equipment I require to help me breathe. It will also assist me in getting transportation to and from my medical care and physical therapy. You would help me defray the exorbitant medical bill costs I have incurred.
Your help would allow me to continue residing in the rental property where I live and aid in keeping the utilities on and running. Please help me avoid homelessness!
Recent prognosis stated the doctors opinion was that, “Gary could die within a year due to acute decompensation”, heart failure caused by acute respiratory distress.
Although these issues are all very difficult to navigate, I’m doing my best to remain positive and continue to fight for another breath.
I am a former law-enforcement officer, have served as an emergency services first responder volunteer for 46 years, and I have volunteered with non-profits for most of my life. As difficult as it is for me to ask for assistance for myself, I have to swallow my pride and just ask.
While I am aware that money is tight, even a donation of five dollars could help towards making a difference. Thank you for your generosity in helping me to breathe a little easier.
Your prayers are also graciously accepted.
Thank you very much for your consideration. God Bless.
With love,
Gary Adler
