Help Garrett pay medical expenses

Garrett Jacobson is a 32-year-old who has been perfectly healthy for his entire life. In the past couple of weeks, Garrett has been through the scare of his life. His parents, Bonnie and Todd Jacobson, have been with him every step of the way.

Thursday, September 23, Garrett started experiencing some serious physical issues. Extreme swelling of his hands, feet and torso and physical pain.

They went to urgent care and the news was not good – the doctors originally thought that he was experiencing cirrhosis of the liver. At 32 years old. They thought he had end-stage renal disease, his liver was so enlarged. Overnight, the blood tests came back. Garrett was called back to the hospital for more tests. The doctors began to think that Garrett was suffering from heart problems. They ran test after test – liver, heart, blood and/or bone infection…expensive tests, and a lot of them. They had to run all these to identify the true underlying issue. Eventually, the doctors found that Garrett’s sodium levels are very low. This caused the swelling – excess liquid in both Garrett’s body cavity and legs. This sodium deficiency caused the heart issues and the liver damage (no cirrhosis, thank God) and an enlarged spleen.

Garrett was transferred to United, where the medical team worked to slowly raise his sodium levels. They had to raise it slowly, otherwise they risked swelling of the brain. He ended up being in the hospital a total of 6 days. The hope is that as they raise the sodium levels and with time all his organs will revert to their normal sizes. This could take a while.

As you can imagine, all these tests come at a very high cost, 6 days of hospitalization, plus the cost of all these tests, is simply going to be financially disastrous.
