Gammelgården has an opportunity to purchase this beautiful hand-felted piece that is 6.5 feet tall, created by Christine Tallberg, a textile artist from Jönköping, Sweden. The image above is only part of the piece. To see the full image, visit: https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=gammelgarden%20birch%20felted
This piece, made from sheep wool, silk, and linen, is one of a kind and would be the focal point of an exhibit about the importance of birch to the early Swedish immigrants.
In the 1800s, birch trees met many of needs of the Swedish immigrants as well as the Ojibwe including food, shelter, and warmth. Gammelgården has artifacts that are made from birch which would illustrate the versatility and uses of birch trees.
The artist's representative, who is based in Minnesota, has offered Gammelgården a discounted price since it would be a beautiful and informative piece for people visiting the museum to see. She has offered the felted birch trees at the wholesale rate minus a $100 discount - $588.
However, this piece was not available when Gammelgården was developing its 2025 budget. So, to obtain this piece, we are asking our supporters and visitors to consider making a donation - whether it's $100, $50, or even $25 - towards the purchase of the felted birches.
If more donations than the price of the piece are received, we will use the extra funds to purchase other artwork to expand the museum's collection.
