My mom and I need financial help to save our house!
I've contacted an actual professional mold remediation company that removes drywall and cleans the wooden beams and stuff. An inspector is coming to take air samples, which I'm pretty sure will be positive for mold, then they'll be able to give me a more accurate estimate for the work, but they're saying between $5-10k.
The price does not include contractor work to replace the drywall and put in insulation though, that will probably cost another $10-15k.
Mold remediation would take about a week, not sure how long the construction would take, just trying to think of living solutions while they're working. We'll need to stay somewhere for that time, including our cat and German Shepherd.
Cost also does not include HVAC installation. Honestly best solution would be to have hvac installed after they remediate the attic, but that's another $10-15k, we'd probably have to get a system for the attic going down into the second floor ceiling and one in the basement going up into the first floor.
We hired someone two years ago for a total of $8k and they scammed us cause they didn't remove any contaminated walls, they just cleaned and painted over.
Then we hired a second group of people for $5k to remediate but they did the same thing, cleaned and painted over so the house still smells.
So this company I'm talking with now actually knows what they're doing and I'm confident that they do.
I'll keep things updated here, but I think this our best solution because we will not find a cheaper place to live than what we're paying right now and our credit scores are tanked so we won't qualify to live anywhere good.
So I'm very hopeful about this plan, I really think it'll work, especially because I know way more of what to look out for in terms of being scammed lol.
Anyway for now the goal is set to $10k so we can have the mold remediation people start ASAP cause this entire thing is certainly going to be a process.
7/11/25 Update: I got the sample results and estimates back. The attic doesn't have any mold growth, which is amazing news! The basement however does, and it's black mold. The garage has a different type of mold but that's the lowest priority of the three.
The attic is quoted at $9k, the basement at $3.5k, and the garage at $5.2k.
Since the basement has the furnace which blows air to the first floor, it's important we get it cleaned ASAP since there's black mold there.
I've raised the goal to include this cost so both the attic and basement can be cleaned, also trying to account for GFM fees.
Thank you so much to those who have donated. Seriously, thank you.
7/28/25 Update: I changed the goal to cover just the basement for now since that is the area that has active mold growth and has the furnace so that needs to be cleaned before the winter, so it has priority
