Help Gai Fight: Supporting Recovery from a Devastating Brain Injury

What Happened

On October 12, 2021, my wife Gayathri (“Gai”) went in for a routine kidney stone procedure. What should have been a simple outpatient treatment turned into a life-shattering tragedy. Due to complications, she suffered a global anoxic brain injury, caused by lack of oxygen, and has remained in a minimally conscious state ever since-(minimally aware of surroundings but unable to talk or move. Yet. )

Our Journey So Far

Doctors told me she might not survive the next day and suggested removing life support. But I held on — to hope, to faith, and to the belief that we as humans only understand a fraction of the brain’s capability to heal. And for the past 3.5 years, Gai has defied those odds—fighting daily, with therapy, love, and care.

We’ve endured 10+ emergency hospital visits, 3 state relocations, countless highs and lows. But Gai keeps trying, and with every flicker of her eyes and every little movement of her fingers, she reminds us of her inner strength.

I am also humbled by the unwavering support of our parents, Gai’s sister, our extended family, and the compassionate caregivers who stand by us.

Why We’re Asking for Help Now

Recently, her insurance stopped covering in-home nursing care, placing a massive financial burden on our family. Monthly care expenses have shot up significantly but my deepest hope is to keep supporting my wife in the coming months and years as she continues to heal.

We are hoping to raise $180,000 to cover her nursing care, therapy and medical expenses. This will not cover full-time nursing, but with the support of family and a few generous therapists and nurses who have even offered to work at reduced rates or volunteer, we can continue to help Gai in her slow but sure recovery.
