A little background about myself
I was born in Nicaragua and I came to California when I was 8 years old. Ever since I was a little girl I always dreamed of coming to the United States and be able to accomplish my dreams and get an education. I remember always being very responsible in my schooling and homework. However, it wasn't always easy for me getting used to being in a new country and not be able to speak in English.
The language barrier made it hard for me to make friends and it was very discouraging for me. When I was 8, I was so eager to learn English that I called a phone number from a TV Ad about learning English (for adults!) because I was so motivated to learn. Now that I look back, it is funny-- because I was underage and they called my mom asking for Mrs. Maradiaga.

I was always a very motivated and goal oriented child, and my passion for nursing began at a very young age and developed when I had my son with complications in the labor and delivery room. My passion of becoming a nurse grew when I realized I enjoy helping people and being hands on in learning about the human body.
When growing up I was raised by my hard working mother who sacrificed her life to give me what I needed and gave me what she could. Furthermore, seeing my mother struggle has been one of my motivations to pursue my education and become an RN.
From what I remember I always did well in my science courses from high school all through college. I graduated from a community college with honors and was part of Sigma Theta Kappa honor society. I was accepted to University of San Francisco where I had the pleasure of doing my clinical work in UCSF Parnassus. I was also accepted to Samuel Merritt University and this is where I will be obtaining my BSN degree.

I volunteered for multiple years at an end of life facility care for children called "George Mark's Children's House" where I fell in love with the children and it felt like home being there. I enjoyed my time there because I was able to take away any physical and emotional pain from them and just make them laugh. I also worked as a home caregiver where I had the opportunity to help the elderly by going into their homes to help them with their activities of daily living. This is where I received a certificate for being "employee of the month".

As a single mother, Latina, immigrant, and minority I realize that there are not a lot of hispanic/latina nurses in the United States. My dream is to be able to give back to my community and serve those who are underprivileged.
Being a mother (and a father) to my son has made it harder for me to be in school, but I have had the resilience to not give up and work for our future. He is my motivation to be a better person everyday and to not give up on my dreams and goals.
I want to be able to finish my last year of nursing school so that I can become an RN and be a helping hand in those in need (physically and emotionally).

As many of you know the Pandemic (Covid-19) has impacted many families in many different ways. For many families it has led to a financial burden. This past year has been difficult for me and my family to be able to pay for my tuition. Unfortunately, even with classes being online my school was not able to lower tuition cost which is nearly $25,000 per semester. As this is my last year of nursing school, any kind of help will be greatly appreciated so that I can accomplish my dream and obtain my degree (BSN).
Thank you so much for reading about my story. I know that now is a hard time for so many people. If you have it in your heart, and have the ability to do so, please consider supporting my Go Fund Me page to help me get through this tough year and finish my studies. I am so grateful for your support, and it will be my honor to turn your gift into giving care for our community.
From my heart to yours, thank you!
