Help Gabriela Pay for Juilliard

I am Sergio Muñoz Leiva, DMA (Juilliard Class of 2022). I am a Chilean violist and music educator. I currently live in Boston and I enjoy a performing and teaching career. I am raising funds on behalf of one of my dear students, Gabriela Ybarra.

WHAT: Since 2020, I have been teaching viola to Gabriela on Zoom. We were paired to work together through Equal Music, a volunteer music lesson program organized by Ilumina Music. Gabriela is 18 years old and from Caracas, Venezuela, where she lives. She graduated from high school as valedictorian of her class. She is a smart, dedicated, and resilient young woman. Gabriela wants to be a professional violist and she was recently accepted to The Juilliard School in New York City to start her Bachelor of Music in the fall of 2024 studying with Carol Rodland. Gabriela was awarded a full-tuition scholarship of 54,400USD and a 10,000USD housing grant—a remarkable and rare opportunity. Juilliard estimates living expenses at 32,182USD. The remaining *22,182USD is a sum that Gabriela’s family is simply not able to cover.

WHEN: Orientation at Juilliard starts on August 16, 2024. In order to apply for her student visa, Gabriela needs to demonstrate to the school and the US government that she or a sponsor has those 22,182USD as liquid assets in a bank account to cover her living expenses. She has already applied to scholarships from other institutions, but sadly those results are announced in late summer, which will be too late for starting her visa application. The visa application process is cumbersome and unpredictable, so she needs these funds as soon as possible and she cannot risk losing this opportunity of a lifetime.

HOW: The reason why I’m starting this campaign on Gabriela’s behalf is because GoFundMe does not disburse donations to Venezuelan bank accounts. All donations will go to my personal US-based bank account. Once Gabriela arrives in the US in August 2024, she will be able to open a bank account in the US and I will transfer the raised funds to her account at that point.

I know firsthand the financial challenges and emotional sacrifices associated with studying in the US as a foreigner. But I also can attest to the invaluable impact that studying in a place like Juilliard can have for a young musician’s professional and personal development. Gabriela herself is aware of the transformative nature of this opportunity and she wanted to express this in her own words: “Since I was very little, going to Juilliard has been my great dream, but one that seemed impossible until not so long ago. Sergio has not only been my teacher but also my mentor on this path, the one who has always believed in me and encouraged me to move forward. If he had told me in 2020 that we would now be doing this campaign because we must do everything we can for me to attend Juilliard, I couldn't have believed him. I can say now with great enthusiasm that my dream is starting to become a reality. I say “starting” because without your help, I won’t be able to fulfill this dream for which I have worked so hard. I just finished high school and I have no income of my own. My mother and family made great sacrifices to afford my high school education. But the cost of attending Juilliard is of an immense magnitude that is completely beyond our reach. At this point, I dare to ask for your help without any shame because I know this is a life-changing opportunity that I cannot allow myself to miss.”

Mi nombre es Sergio Muñoz Leiva, DMA (Clase de Juilliard 2022). Soy un violista y educador musical chileno. Actualmente vivo en Boston y me desempeño tocando conciertos y enseñando. Estoy haciendo esta campaña para reunir fondos para una de mis estudiantes, Gabriela Ybarra.

QUÉ: Desde el 2020 le he dado clases de viola a Gabriela por Zoom. Fuimos asignados para trabajar juntos a través de Equal Music, un programa voluntario de clases de instrumento organizado por Ilumina Music. Gabriela tiene 18 años y es de Caracas, Venezuela, donde vive. Ella se graduó del colegio con las mejores notas de su generación. Es una joven inteligente, dedicada y muy resiliente. Gabriela quiere ser violista profesional y recientemente fue aceptada en The Juilliard School en New York City para comenzar su Licenciatura en Música en septiembre de 2024 estudiando con Carol Rodland. Gabriela recibió una beca de matrícula completa de 54.400 dólares y una beca para gastos de manutención de 10.000 dólares. Juilliard estima que los gastos de manutención son 32.182 dólares. Los 22.182 dólares restantes son una suma que la familia de Gabriela simplemente no puede costear.

CUÁNDO: La orientación para estudiantes de primer año en Juilliard comienza el 16 de agosto de 2024. Para poder postular a la visa de estudiante, Gabriela necesita demostrarle a la escuela y al gobierno estadounidense que ella o un benefactor tiene esos 22.182 dólares líquidos en una cuenta bancaria para cubrir sus gastos de manutención. Ella ya ha postulado a becas de otras instituciones, pero desafortunadamente esos resultados los anuncian en agosto, que sería muy tarde para comenzar su postulación a la visa. El proceso de postulación a la visa es complejo e impredecible, por lo que ella necesita ese dinero lo antes posible y no puede arriesgarse a perder esta oportunidad.

CÓMO: La razón por la que estoy haciendo esta campaña en nombre de Gabriela es que GoFundMe no entrega donaciones a cuentas bancarias venezolanas. Todas las donaciones irán a mi cuenta bancaria personal en Estados Unidos. Una vez que Gabriela llegue a Estados Unidos en agosto de 2024, ella podrá abrir una cuenta bancaria aquí en Estados Unidos y yo transferiré los fondos reunidos de esta campaña a su cuenta en ese momento.

Conozco por experiencia propia los desafíos económicos y los sacrificios emocionales asociados a estudiar en Estados Unidos siendo extranjero. Pero también puedo dar fe del impacto invaluable que estudiar en un lugar como Juilliard puede tener para el desarrollo profesional y personal para un joven músico. Gabriela está consciente de lo transformadora que será esta oportunidad y lo desea expresar en sus propias palabras: “Desde pequeña ir a Juilliard ha sido mi gran sueño, pero uno que parecía imposible hasta hace no mucho. Sergio no solo ha sido mi profesor, sino también mi mentor en este camino, quien siempre ha creído en mí y me ha incentivado a ir adelante. Si él me hubiera dicho en 2020 que ahora estaríamos haciendo todo lo posible para que yo pueda ir a Juilliard, no se lo habría creído. Ahora puedo decir con gran entusiasmo que mi sueño comienza a ser una realidad. Digo “comienza” porque sin tu ayuda, no podré alcanzar mi sueño por el que he trabajado tanto. Terminé el colegio hace muy poco y no tengo ingresos propios. Mi madre y mi familia hicieron un gran sacrificio para costear mi enseñanza secundaria. Pero el costo de asistir a Juilliard es de una magnitud inmensa que está completamente fuera de nuestro alcance. En esta situación, me atrevo a pedir tu ayuda sin ninguna vergüenza porque sé que esta es una oportunidad que me va a cambiar la vida y que no me puedo permitir perder.”
