Please Help Gabriel Get the Life-Changing Device He Deserves
Gabriel is a bright, loving, and resilient 14-year-old boy who lives each day with Autism and Type 1 Diabetes. He faces more challenges than most kids his age, but through it all, he continues to surprise us with his courage, his unique perspective on the world, and his quiet strength.
Managing diabetes is never easy, but for Gabriel, it’s especially difficult. His Autism makes it hard for him to recognize and communicate when his blood sugar is dropping or rising—a situation that can quickly become dangerous without immediate attention. Sensory issues have also prevented him from using an Insulin Pump in his earlier years, which helps to manage and regulate insulin injection. Although he was finally able to wear one at the age of 10 years old it is now outdated.
Although funding is available, he will not be eligible for another 3 years as coverage is only available once every 7 years. Due to his late start, we simply cannot wait that long.
Gabriel’s health is at risk, and he urgently needs an upgrade to a new Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) and the latest wireless insulin pump.
This new system—recently approved in Canada—integrates the CGM and pump with an intelligent algorithm that adjusts insulin levels automatically in real time. It increases insulin when needed and stops it when levels drop too low. It’s more than a medical device. It’s a lifeline.
Why Does This Matter?
This new CGM/Pump will give Gabriel:
- Greater independence as he grows into his teenage years
- Continuous and Automated regulation to keep him in range
- More safety at night, during school, and when he’s out in the community
- And most of all, it will give peace of mind to our family, knowing we can monitor and respond to his needs quickly—no matter what.
Unfortunately, CGMs/Insulin Pumps and their ongoing supplies are extremely expensive, and not all of the costs are covered. Along with the current lack of funding we are turning to our community for support.
How Can You Help?
- Your donation, no matter how small, will bring us one step closer to making this possible for Gabriel.
- You’ll be giving him the safety he deserves, the freedom to be a kid, and a better quality of life—something every child should have.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being part of Gabriel’s journey.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Eddy and Patricia Lio
