Hey everyone, I’m Gabe.
I'm a YA author. You might know me from YouTube, where I talk about writing, publishing, and books on my channel, bookishpixie . Or you might know me from Twitter , where I talk about all of that and also trans stuff, and social justice, and politics.
The long and short of it is this: I’m a nonbinary trans guy who needs top surgery. I’ve been binding full time since February 2018—a practice that, even when done carefully and responsibly, isn’t really healthy long-term. The risks, to me, are worth it because the rightness and confidence I feel when seeing myself with a flat chest is indescribable—and it’s equally difficult to explain how gut-wrenching it feels when I invariably have to take breaks from binding. I need top surgery so I can stop risking damage to my chest, so I can breathe deeply and easily no matter what I’m wearing or where I am, so I can be more comfortable in my own skin. I don't want to have to hide my chest behind a binder anymore, not to mention binding in the summer in a city that gets very humid and warm is incredibly uncomfortable.
I’m lucky that I live in a state where it’s required by law for health insurance to cover trans healthcare including gender affirming surgeries, so my insurance is covering the bulk of the cost of the surgery. However, I still have a not-insignificant fee I have to pay the surgeon directly, and I need to save enough for a month of recovery time when I won’t be working. Right now I work part time and freelance edit, which is enough to pay my bills and sometimes give me a little extra each month, but unfortunately it’s not nearly enough for me to save up what I need for the surgery by the fall, which is when I’m aiming to get this done.
My consultation with the surgeon is in August, at which point I may need to adjust my goal one way or the other, but I didn’t want to wait until then to start fundraising as I’ve been told they schedule the surgery about six weeks out, and I’d rather have more time than that to try to reach my goal.
The breakdown of what I currently know I need:
$2,000 — Surgeon’s fee
$2,300 — Average living expense for a month
Total: $4,300
I do have some money I can provide myself, which is why I'm not asking for the full amount, but whether you donate or share this campaign, every little bit helps; the more that gets funded the less I have to pull from savings that I need to cover my bills during months when freelancing is slow.
