Help Gabbie Get to Tin House!

Donation protected
Hi, friends and soon-to-be friends!

I am Gabrielle Grace Hogan (Gabbie), a queer/lesbian woman and poet living in Tulsa. I got my MFA from UT-Austin in 2022, worked for a couple of years at an office job, before being laid off in March of this year. Since then I have been struggling with my expenses. While I recently began a job as a barista and am still applying to editing/writing positions, my financial situation is still very much so tenuous.

Recently I was accepted to the Tin House Autumn Workshop! For those of you who know of Tin House, you know that it is a rare opportunity to be selected for participation in one of its workshops. The acceptance rate is 10%, and has been known to jumpstart careers. I am over the moon at this opportunity, but again, due to my financial situation, my ability to participate is up in the air.

About Me

My work has been published by over 50 journals, including TriQuarterly, CutBank, Salt Hill, and others, and has been supported by the James A. Michener Fellowship and the Ragdale Foundation. In the past, I have served as Poetry Editor of Bat City Review, and as Co-Founder/Co-Editor of You Flower / You Feast, an anthology of work inspired by Harry Styles. I have published two chapbooks, Soft Obliteration (Ghost City Press 2020), and Love Me With the Fierce Horse Of Your Heart (Ursus Americanus Press 2023). I am also a Team Writer for Autostraddle and an Assistant Poetry Editor for Foglifter. More information can be found on my website, gabriellegracehogan.com. I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

My work is most concerned with elevating the lesbian voice in contemporary poetry. Many of us who identify as lesbians do so with the understanding of all that we may lose for it. Many lesbians live at the intersection of (perceived) womanhood and homosexuality, meaning we live at the intersection of misogyny and homophobia. This oppression is made worse for trans lesbians, disabled lesbians, lesbians of color, and lesbians of lower socioeconomic status. I seek to add my work to a powerful lineage of lesbian poets such as Eileen Myles, Audre Lorde, Marilyn Hacker, Pat Parker, and others.

Poetry is my life. Writing is the reason I wake up each day and am able to keep going. Being recognized for that writing by Tin House is tremendous. I cannot think of a better way to spend my time and my money than to put it towards this dream I have held in my heart since I was a little girl.

Why Your Support Matters

The opportunity to attend this workshop would be a potentially life-changing opportunity for myself and my career. According to their website, "The Tin House Autumn Workshops are long weekend intensives consisting of curated and intimate workshops, meetings with faculty/Tin House Books Editors/Agents, craft lectures, generative exercises, and readings." Being able to meet with other writers like myself, as well as to obtain guidance and connections with established writers, editors, and agents, would be an invaluable experience for my future as a published poet. I will also be placed in the workshop of Gabrielle Bates, who I cite as one of my personal heroes and inspirations.

I don't like asking for money. But I also know that many other writers have been in a position like mine, and it should not be shameful to ask for help, especially during a time such as late capitalism when creating art becomes more difficult and thus more crucial.

Cost

For transparency's sake, the amount asked for here would go to the following: $1000 for the cost of the workshop, and $500 for the cost of lodging.

A $400 deposit is due September 15, with the remaining $600 due November 8. $500 for lodging would be due November 18, at the conclusion of the weekend.

Thank you!

While I know not everyone is in the financial place to be able to donate, I want from the bottom of my heart to say thank you to anyone who can and who does. Likewise, if you can't donate, I thank you for taking the time to read this, and hopefully you will share it!

All the love, light, and beauty to all of you. Thank you for whatever you can spare. You would be making this tiny lesbian's dreams come true.
