My name is Savannah Montgomery and I will be a rising sophomore at Xavier University of Louisiana (The 3rd best HBCU in the U.S). I’m currently studying chemistry with a minor in biology on the pre-medical track. I finished my freshman year with a 3.68 cumulative GPA. I was very involved outside of the classroom as well my freshman year; I am a member of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honors Society, National Society of Leadership and Success, Biomedical Honor Corps and other community service-based organizations.
I’m an inspiring pediatrician, with a hard focus on mental health in communities of color. Oftentimes I feel individuals hide their pain and use other unhealthy mechanisms to cope with rather than reaching out to someone for help. Being a victim and struggling with my mental health I know it can get and I believe that no one should have to face their struggles alone.
Due to my outstanding work in my freshman year, Xavier gave me another scholarship resulting in my tuition, fees, and books being covered. After an additional scholarship, this left me with just housing to cover. Due to the pandemic, Xavier had limited housing, I was one of many students who was left with no housing or additional resources. This resulted in me having to sign a lease, the rent is $900 monthly which includes wifi, water, electricity, and other amenities. After working this summer and saving money, I have a total balance of $7,000 left to fill.
Being the first generation comes with pros and cons. one of the biggest pros has been being able to continue my education at one of the most luxurious schools alongside other African-American scholars. One of the cons is a constant fight for funding and additional resources.
The money donated to this GoFundMe will be directly put into my housing payment portal (I will later post a screenshot of the money paid).
