My name is Zara Meggett, and I have always been an observant and curious person, deeply interested in the stories of people in my community in the Bronx, NY — especially those whose voices go unheard. One day, my mom picked me up from my after-school program and introduced me to a reporter from ABC7NY who was covering an incident that rattled the neighborhood.

Although our conversation was kept off the record, I reflect on the small but meaningful gesture of offering his time to listen to how the event had indirectly affected me as an elementary student from the same school as the victim.

That moment stayed with me. It showed me how powerful it can be when someone takes the time to hear one’s experiences.

Even at a young age, I sensed that there was more to our community’s circumstances than what people assumed. These experiences shaped my empathy and curiosity about the world, inspiring me to pursue journalism at Boston University.

Storytelling, to me, is as important as ever in a time as uncertain as now. Stories help us understand, connect, and relate to one another while recognizing the humanity in experiences different from our own.

I decided to pursue Boston University’s Padua Conflict & Crisis Reporting in Italy this summer to close out my undergraduate career. The program prepares students to approach crisis and hostile environments effectively, safely, and ethically through immersive, hands-on learning featuring guest speakers and program trips.

Studying abroad was never something I imagined would be possible for me, but this opportunity would allow me to grow both personally and professionally by stepping into a living classroom to experience Italy’s culture, community, and lifestyles every moment that I go — and in turn, hoping to bring a piece of that experience back home.
