Hi! I’m Vera Drew and I’m a 30 year old transgender woman living in Pasadena. I started transitioning last June, and this year I am getting two operations done. The first is getting rid of my pesky Adam’s Apple and the other is top surgery (aka I’m getting me some boobs). While to the untrained cisgender eye a lot of the operations that trans folx such as myself get often seem merely cosmetic, these procedures are life-saving in that they help lessen gender dysphoria and give some of us the ability to “pass” in situations that may not be necessarily safe. I’ve struggled with gender dysphoria my entire life - it fueled my depression, addictions, and compulsions. My mental health has greatly improved since I started medically transitioning - I stand taller, I eat right, I don’t smoke tobacco - and I know that getting these procedures will only help me continue down the road of feeling more comfortable in my body.
While I am fortunate enough to have a private insurance that covers some of my trans-care, medically transitioning is incredibly costly. These are only two of the four operations that I plan on getting, and getting anesthesia alone can cost over 1500 dollars. I’m doing my best to save up for this stuff, but I see a lot of other trans people using GoFundMe so I figured I’d give it a try.
Look...I know the world is a dumpster fire right now.
