We're Trans Matters Worldwide: an independent production company making films about transgender lives, for the transgender community and the people who want to understand us better.
We're looking to raise £125,000 over the next 18 months to make two new films: a Christmas-themed documentary coming this December, and our first feature-length film, which we'll be making throughout 2027.
You may be asking yourself: Why are we doing this?
We started TMW because we were tired of waiting for other people to make the films we wanted to see.
Our work has always been about putting trans people at the centre of their own stories. We've made films about trans joy, trans pride, gender dysphoria, fear and healthcare; often tackling subjects that aren't being given the attention, nuance or humanity they deserve elsewhere.
Our most recent project "Dear Wes…" (https://youtu.be/06bu04v-fXA?si=Xl1iZFsxuWIOGyX0), was made to platform the voices of transgender youth and hold then Health Secretary Wes Streeting accountable for his role in the government's treatment of trans healthcare.
We didn't have a broadcaster behind us. We didn't have a studio financing the production. We went directly to our audience; and thank god you showed up.
That experience changed the way we think about making films.
We've spent years trying to get permission from the traditional film industry to make the work we believe in. Now, rather than waiting for someone else to decide whether these stories are worth telling, we're going to tell them ourselves.
So... What's next?
First, we're making a Christmas film with the working title: Let's talk about Christmas, actually...
Coming this December, we'll be returning to the format of our previous film "What Keeps You Up at Night?" (https://youtu.be/nTppN_kFTLc?si=OtwWHtJ9GcZMMtn7), in which we interviewed members of the trans community inside elaborate recreations of their favourite horror movies.
This time, we're swapping horror for the holidays.
We'll be recreating scenes from people's favourite Christmas movies while asking them about their own experiences of the festive season. The good, the bad, the complicated and everything in between.
Then, in 2027, we're going bigger.
We're making our first feature-length film: a documentary about sex, love and relationships within the transgender community.
This isn't a project we've dreamed up overnight. Pre-production began in 2024, long before we started making "Dear Wes…". We've been thinking about this film, researching it and developing it for years.
Now we're ready to make it.
We'll be travelling across the UK, Ireland and America meeting people from across the trans community and hearing their stories. We're interested in the things that are often missing from conversations about trans lives: intimacy, desire, relationships, sex, love, vulnerability, joy and connection.
It's an ambitious film.
And that's why we need your help.
Where will your money go?
Your donations will directly fund the work required to make these projects happen.
That includes:
- Production equipment that we'll use across both films and future TMW projects
- Travel and accommodation to allow us to meet contributors across the UK and Ireland
- Crew and production costs
- Studio and location hire
- Post-production, including editing, sound, colour and motion graphics
- Music and festival submissions
- Community events and screenings
- The ongoing social media content and campaign work that allows us to keep TMW running and reach new audiences
We're deliberately building this campaign over 18 months rather than asking you to fund an entire film in one go.
That means we can raise money as we go, spend it where it's needed, and show you what we're doing with it.
You'll be able to watch the Christmas film take shape. You'll see us travelling around the country. You'll meet the people we're making the films with. You'll see the behind-the-scenes chaos, the successes, the disasters and, hopefully, eventually, the finished film.
So, why GoFundMe?
We're not running a thirty-day Kickstarter and hoping we hit a magic number before the clock runs out.
We're in this for the long haul.
Our goal is £125,000, but we don't need to have £125,000 sitting in the bank before we can start making things. The more we raise, the more we can do; and we'll be sharing that journey with you along the way.
Every donation helps us take another step.
£5 helps.
£50 helps.
£500 helps.
And if you can't donate at all, that's okay too. Sharing our films, coming to an event, telling someone about TMW or simply following along makes a difference.
We're not waiting for permission!
We believe that trans people deserve to see themselves represented in all of the messy, complicated, funny, sexy, joyful and ordinary parts of life.
We believe those stories are worth making.
And we believe that the people who want to see them should have a say in making them happen.
So we're going to make the films we want to see in the world.
We'd really fucking like you to be part of it!
Thank you for supporting Trans Matters Worldwide :)
