Hello, my name is Robert Young and I am the writer/director/star of a new political film musical, NIXON/KING.
We are looking to raise funds to pay our cast and crew.
WHY YOU SHOULD DONATE:
In these tense times, supporting the arts is critical.
NIXON/KING holds a mirror up to politicians, the media, and humanity in general. We want to make a statement about political courage, reaching across the aisle to do the moral thing. We cannot do that without your help. NIXON/KING is a bold story that will entertain and educate audiences for generations to come.
CONCEPT:
NIXON/KING is in the style of beloved musicals present and past: HAMILTON, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, and LES MIS, but with new innovations to accommodate a more intimate show. With barely a quarter of the cast of the aforementioned larger shows, our musical will predominantly be an amplified “Lincoln/Douglas” style debate between two powerhouse actors playing Nixon and King. The stakes will be heightened with the prison setting—a real-life location in Reidsville, GA that Dr. King languished in before the (historical) timely intervention of then-Senator John F. Kennedy. Our ahistorical twist is that then-Vice President Nixon is risking his campaign, and even his very life, in visiting the beleaguered civil rights leader. This secret visit is in the spirit of Nixon’s real political gambles, such as making a name for himself in the Hiss-Chambers case, or opening up relations with China.
