Help fund the fight against racism in 2021

Donation protected
2020 has been a pivotal year in the fight against racism.

The global Black Lives Matter movement has shone a spotlight on the horrific levels of institutional racism in our society and sent a message that we are no longer willing to stand for it.

With your help, we want to make 2021 the year we make real progress on the campaigns that inspired so many thousands of people this year.

From action on disproportionate COVID impact to scrapping Section 60 stop and search, from challenging Islamophobia & antisemitism to defending refugee and migrant rights, we believe that with unity, determination and proper funding we can make serious inroads in the struggle against the racism affecting millions in our society.

From national online events and and campaigns to materials for local groups and initiatives, your donations are what will help drive our work in 2021, and help bring about the change that we need.

What we've achieved in 2020

2020 has been a year unlike any other, and the COVID pandemic meant our #WorldAgainstRacism rally for UN Anti-Racism Day moved online. Thousands joined an international rally with Gary Younge and international guests to discuss the international fight against racism in the age of COVID; and unite around campaigns against racism, Islamophobia, antisemitism and the far right, and in defence of refugee & migrant rights.

As the scapegoating of east-Asian communities led to a further rise in hate crime and it became clear the pandemic would lead to a massive humanitarian catastophe, we launched a campaign for Action Not Scapegoating on COVID19

And as stark evidence emerged the pandemic was disproportionately affecting BAME communities, we launched a campaign for and an independent public inquiry on BAME deaths alongside a major online rally bringing together medical professionals and frontline workers, faith and communnity groups, politicians and trade unionists around demands for an inquiry and immediate action.

This widely reported meeting and campaign helped build enormous pressure on the government, but the campaign for action & an inquiry is now more crucial than ever as the British Government seeks to attack communities for seeking to challenge institutional racism instead of recognising its own contribution to inequalities.

As the brutal and callous murder of George Floyd shocked the globe and launched a historic resurgence of the Black Lives Matter Movement, Stand Up To Racism immediately went to work to bring the broadest possible alliance in the UK behind the call for justice for George Floyd and to say Black Lives Matter, starting with a major online rally (above).

As well as organising socially distanced events in towns and cities across the country in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, we launched the Take The Knee wherever you are  initiative at the start of June, inspired by Colin Kaepernick and protesters in the US taking the knee at demonstrations, to allow everyone to take action for justice for George Floyd during the lockdown.

This had an enormous cultural impact, with thousands joining in on the #TakeTheKnee hashtag, coverage in all major newspapers and participation by fire brigades, hospital departments and celebrities. As the football season resumed on 12 June, the initiative helped encourage the Premier League to show solidarity with the international Black Lives Matter Movement by players taking the knee at the start of matches.

Following this, we launched a series of Open Forums to discuss the demands of the Black Lives Matter movement, and how we can work together to implement them.  Zoom Meetings on decolonising the curriculum and recognising Britain's imperial legacy, fighting for action on policing and justice for those affected by police violence, and campaigning for action on disproportionate COVID impact took place with hundreds of activists and organisations across the country.

A key demand that came out of these meetings was to scrap Section 60, the power that allows police to stop and search people without a prior reason, that was used to harrass thousands of young black people during lockdown. Events took place across the country calling for section 60 to be scrapped, and the campaign continues.

As part of linking campaigns in Britain with the struggle in the US, thousands joined a meeting with Rev Jesse Jackson, Diane Abbott MP, Kwame Kwei-Armah and leading campaigners from the US & UK.

After a summer of campaigning on these issues, the Stand Up To Racism International Conference brought together leading anti-racists from across the globe with thousands of activists in two online rallies building unity on the key issues and a series of workshops on campaigning work to discuss how to make change happen.

November was Islamophobia Awareness Month, and in collaboration with MEND and others, local SUTR groups held #IAM2020 meetings to build unity against the rise in Islamophobia.

This was also the period when French President Emmanuel Macron launched a serious attack on the Muslim community, forcing the dissolution of the Collective against Islamophobia (CCIF) among other groups, cracking down on civil liberties and painting Muslims as extremists.

In response to this, Stand Up To Racism called a rally with Marwan Muhammed, former director of the CCIF, French Assembly Member Daniele Obono, and British politicians and faith leaders to raise awareness of this crackdown and build opposition to Macrons attacks, as well as discussing the fight against institutional Islamophobia in Britain, the US and other parts of Europe.

And linking up with groups such as All Black Lives UK , we organised events opposing attempts by Trump to undermine democracy, and in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement in the US, including a protest outside the US Embassy the day after the US election.

Let's make 2021 the year of the anti-racist fightback

2020 has presented us with enormous challenges, but has also laid the ground for real advances in 2021. Planned initiatives and events in 2021 include:

Holocaust Memorial Day  in January, hearing from survivors and those who lost family in the Holocaust, saying with one voice Never Again, and pledging to defeat antisemitism, fascism, anti-Roma racism and all forms or racism & scapegoating.

UN Anti Racism Day National Day of Action in association with the TUC, with a major international online rally and events in towns and cities across the country bringing together communities, trade unionists, councillors, MPs and cultural figures to show unity in purpose to oppose institutional racism, Islamophobia & antisemitism and call for the rights of refugees and migrants to be respected.

Building pressure to win the demands of the Black Lives Matter Movement including:

    • A stepping up of the campaign for action and an independent public Inquiry on the Disproportionate impact of COVID-19

    • A major campaign on Police violence and harrassment of Black People, including the scrapping of section 60 with partner organisations. (See here figures released in December on disproportionate use of force )

    • Campaigns to decolonise the curriculum and face up to Britain's imperial and colonial legacy, in conjunction with trade unions such as the NEU, MPs, activists and partner organisations.

Initiatives to build solidarity with refugees and defend migrant rights, including forcing the Government to abide by international conventions, end detention, scapegoating and the inhumane treatment of refugees.

Working with fans groups, Show Racism The Red Card and others to challenge racism and the far right in football, and help footballers utilise their position to challenge racism in society.

Working to challenge the far-right including the rise of far-right terrorism, hate crime and organised online abuse.
