Help Fund the Dr. Doris J. Turner Memorial Scholarship

Hi, my name is Dr. Cherryl Nappier, and I am supporting the funding of a scholarship in the name of my late aunt, Dr. Doris J Turner. In memory of Dr. Turner, who was a lifelong learner, our family has established a memorial scholarship in her memory. The Dr. Doris J. Turner Memorial Scholarship will be housed within the Department of Modern & Classical Language Studies at Kent State University.

The Dr. Doris J. Turner Memorial Scholarship aims to support students who share Dr. Turner's passion for learning and dedication to academic excellence. By contributing to this scholarship, you are helping to ensure that her legacy lives on through the success of future generations.

Dr. Turner was a distinguished professor, an exceptional educator, a dedicated mentor, and a cherished friend to many at Kent State University.

Despite spending much of her youth in a time where Black women were underserved in colleges and universities in the United States and across the world, Dr. Turner's story is one of overcoming adversity. Her list of accolades is impressive: She was a Fulbright recipient and was recognized as a Distinguished Teaching Award at Kent State University Foundation. She was the winner of The Rockefeller and The National Research Council Award from Johns Hopkins University. For over 40 years, she served as a professor of Modern and Classical Language Studies and coordinator for Latin American studies, which earned her The Romance Languages and Literatures Award. Her passion for learning and commitment to helping others achieve their fullest potential left an indelible mark on the university.

After her retirement, she continued her quest to learn as much as she could about language and Brazilian cultures by taking many courses at a community college near her. Those who knew her describe long conversations about the latest lectures she attended, professors and assignments. She enjoyed refreshing her knowledge of history and English

literature and believed in the importance of always learning and growing.

At 92 years old, Dr. Turner was still working on her research, focusing on Afro-Brazilian life.

She spoke Spanish, Portuguese, French and was studying Chinese at the time of her passing.

Please donate any amount to memorialize Dr. Doris J. Turner, and you can help pass down her legacy to future generations of students. The next generation of lifelong learners needs our support.

Donations will be made in honor of Dr. Doris J. Turner, and contribute to the Dr. Doris J Turner Memorial Fund. Once the fundraiser has ended, an appointed family member will send a check with a letter of signees to Kent State University. Your name will be include, should you decide to donate.
