Help Fund Stop Asian Hate Boston Rally
Donation protected
The Asian American community has been facing an overwhelming number of attacks and hate crimes, particularly our Asian elderly, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
84-year-old Thai man Vicha Ratanapakdee was killed after being slammed in San Francisco.
61-year-old Filipino man Noel Quintana was slashed across the face with a boxcutter on a Manhattan subway.
56-year-old Chinese woman Ying Ngov was attacked and beaten by three men in Pennsylvania.
These are just a few of the countless crimes committed that have caused widespread fear in Asian American communities nationwide. As a country, we can no longer ignore these tragedies that have plagued our communities.
On March 13th, 2021, a coalition of college students and community members wanting to make a change will be hosting a rally & march titled “Stop Asian Hate Boston” to honor victims of anti-Asian hate crimes and condemn the violence committed against our community. The event will commence on Boston Common at the Parkman Bandstand and conclude with a call-to-action march to the steps of the Massachusetts State House: https://fb.me/e/MGaU6Y5z
But we need your help.
We need your support to cover expenses for the event such as:
advertising campaigns
equipment rentals
transportation
masks, gloves, signs etc. for distribution
and much more.
All additional proceeds not going to the rally will be donated to charities and organizations supporting the Asian community through legal aid, resources, and advocacy.
Help us amplify our message against hate & injustice here in Boston! Any donation is truly appreciated.
If you are unable to donate at this time, please help spread this campaign on your social media.
Thank you. Your generosity and financial support means the world to us!
About Stop Asian Hate (Boston):
We are a student-led grassroots initiative composed of Asian American college students and allies who aim to tackle the issue of hate crimes and violence against Asian Americans. Since we’re not operating under a large organization, the funds to put this demonstration together are coming directly out of our pockets, so we’d love and greatly appreciate any donations. At such an important time in history, we believe it’s crucial now more than ever to hold such an event and be able to continue the momentum in the future.
About the lead organizers:
Ryan Doan Nguyen:
Hi everyone! My name is Ryan Doan Nguyen, and I’m an 18-year-old student at Harvard University, where I serve as co-vice president of the Harvard Vietnamese Association and plan to major in Government with a minor in Ethnicity, Migration, Rights.
A few weeks ago, I awoke to the story of Vicha Ratanapakdee, an 84-year-old Thai American who was shoved to the ground and ultimately killed. I slammed my laptop shut right away, with literal tears in my eyes. He looked just like my Ong Noi, my grandfather. I’ve been following the string of anti-Asian hate crimes and racism since the start of the pandemic, and there have been thousands upon thousands. As a Vietnamese-Lao-American whose parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles fled the Vietnam War as refugees, the collective struggles of Asian Americans trying to make a life for themselves in this country that promised them freedom, opportunity, and peace is something I care deeply about.
So, watching the death of yet another fellow community member pushed me to my breaking point, and I decided I could no longer sit still. I should not have to worry that my grandma will be set on fire while putting out the trash. I should not have to worry that my uncle will come home from the subway one day slashed across the face. But I’m worrying because it’s happening. And it’s happening everywhere. So, I drafted a statement for my college’s Vietnamese Association condemning the recent violence and opened up my phone to learn about inspiring rallies being held in California and New York. Calling up my insanely talented friend, Janet, who has more experience organizing than I do, I told myself, “We’re making this happen here.” Connect with me on Twitter and Instagram (@ryandoannguyen ), and let's come together to make it happen!
Janet Hernandez:
Hello everyone! My name is Janet Hernandez. I am an organizer and activist originally from Miami, FL. I am a proud first-gen, low-income Latinx student at Harvard University. Apart from organizing, I am passionate about immigrant rights and the fight against gun violence. Ryan and I saw this opportunity to really bring attention to the recent disturbing rise in hate crimes across the country and take action to help. As an ally, I have a duty to be there for my fellow Asian brothers and sisters who are suffering as a community right now. I’m ready to #StandUpAgainstHate together.
Manny Chong:
I am a proud Asian Canadian grad student currently studying at Northeastern, pursuing a M.S. in Counseling Psychology. I care about people. My passion is in curating community and advocating for those who often feel unheard or alone. In times of difficulty, we must look out for our most vulnerable for we are only as strong as our weakest link. Let’s build community together and connect with me on Instagram & TikTok (@communitycurator ).
