My dear sister, Samantha Arland, wife to Dan and mom to Coop and Reid, experienced life-altering and incomprehensible news in May 2023. What started out as a migraine for Sam, was diagnosed as a brain tumor. On May 11, 2023, Sam had a successful craniotomy at The University of Penn Hospital to remove the tumor and she thankfully recovered with no deficits.
Six weeks of difficult waiting were met with unexpected and unwelcome results – Sam was diagnosed with a grade IV tumor, Glioblastoma (GBM). Treatment for GBM is 6 weeks of Proton Radiation Therapy, 5 days a week and daily chemotherapy. During this time, Sam had to take a leave of absence from her job in addition to experiencing hair loss, fatigue, anxiety and, of course, being a wife and mom. Sam finished this treatment like the warrior that she is, waited patiently for her next MRI and ultimately spent the next nine months taking a strong chemotherapy pill for 5 days every month. Sam had her MRI in September 2023 and everything was stable! She continues to receive MRIs every 6-8 weeks and those have remained unchanged and stable!
Committed to healing for herself and her family, Sam has spent the past year researching and participating in many simultaneous non-traditional alternatives including a Keto diet, various supplements, heat therapy and off-label prescription medications. Sam and Dan traveled to NYC to see Dr. Raymond Chang, an alternative oncologist who runs the Meridian Medical Clinic. He is known throughout the world to incorporate both Eastern and Western medicine to help with cancer and chronic illnesses. Dr. Chang placed Sam on a host of different medications and urged her to finish her treatment plan with University of Penn and then he would speak with her more about additional non-traditional therapies.
Sam is about to embark on the next stage of her healing journey and we need your support. On the advice of Dr. Chang, Sam and Dan will travel to Frankfurt, Germany in August to begin Cell Therapy treatment at The Institute of Cell Therapy. Here, treatment using a personalized cancer vaccine, also known as Dendritic Cell Therapy will begin. This process will continue in Dr. Chang's office where she will receive monthly injections along with T Cell Therapy. This treatment, visits to date with Dr. Chang, alternative medications and supplements that are NOT covered by insurance. This is extremely expensive. Our goal is to help Sam get better, no matter what the cost. Together, we can come together to help alleviate the financial burden on the Arland family.
I can use so many adjectives to describe my beautiful sister. Sam is a wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, friend, hard worker, beautiful, intelligent and such a fashionista! Watching her battle brain cancer is NEVER one that I thought I would have to write about, but now I can add: warrior, bad ass and cancer survivor!
If you would be so kind to donate to her treatment, we greatly appreciate it. If you can't donate, please share. You never know the impact her story could have on someone else.
So many wonderful people have done so much for her, Dan and the boys. From gift cards, meal trains, prayers, flowers, visits and beautiful cards for emotional support. They are overwhelmed with gratitude! Please continue to pray for no recurrences, strength and clarity, for Coop and Reid to have decades with their Mom and for medical breakthrough in brain cancer treatment.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
