Re-memory is a documentary that explores the experience of resurfacing repressed memories. Mimicking the psychological process of recovery, we explore the phenomena through interviews with mental health experts, those who have recovered repressed memories, and existing media.
Why This Film Matters
What are the lengths your own mind will go to protect you? And what happens when it stops?
When trauma happens, the brain sometimes hides the memory as a survival mechanism. Years and even decades later, these memories can resurface, uninvited and unfiltered. It’s called dissociative amnesia — and it’s real, human, and far more common than we talk about.
Re-Memory aims to bring this hidden process to light. Through the deeply personal story of our interviewee, as well as expert insight from a mental health professional, we explore what it feels like to suddenly remember traumatic experiences that the mind once buried.
This film is more than just a documentary. It’s a meditation on memory, trauma, and our relationship to ourselves. .
What does it look like?
Structured in three distinct chapters, Re-Memory mirrors the psychological process of repressed memories resurfacing, and aims to answer the following questions:
Part I: Repression
- What is having a repressed memory like, and why do we repress them?
- How is the memory storage and retrieval process interrupted when a memory is repressed?
Part II: Remembering
- What does it feel like to remember a repressed memory, and why do they resurface later in life?
- What psychological purpose do repressed memories serve?
Part III: Recovery
- How does one cope with a repressed memory resurfacing and the subsequent symptoms?
- What controversies remain around repressed memories?
Educational + Historical Layer
This is not just a personal film. It’s educational.
We include:
- Archival photos and early misconceptions about the brain and trauma
- Footage from public domain sources like the National Library of Medicine, NASA, and Prelinger Archives
- Quotes from pioneers in trauma therapy, including Dr. Francine Shapiro, founder of EMDR
- Historical perspectives from Freud, the 1990s “recovered memory” movement, and modern neuroscience
This additional context aims to break stigma, clarify the science behind repressed memories, and restore credibility to survivors' stories.
What is our goal?
With this documentary, we hope to:
- Validate the lived experiences of people with repressed memories
- Educate the public on the neuroscience of dissociative amnesia/repressed memories
- Reduce stigma around trauma, memory issues, and mental illness
- Offer comfort to those navigating their own recovery

Why Now?
We live in a time where conversations around trauma, mental health, and healing are growing… but repressed memories remain one of the most controversial and misunderstood areas of psychology. Re-Memory seeks to change that.
We believe storytelling has the power to educate, connect, and heal. If this project resonates with you, if you believe in supporting mental health initiatives and educating more people on these issues, please support our film.
Your contribution, big or small, brings us one step closer to telling this important story. Even if you can’t donate right now, sharing this campaign or talking about repressed memories helps break silence.
Let’s remember… together.
