"(In)convenience" is a queer romantic comedy set in San Francisco
The Film
Our short film follows Kirby (he/him), a trans man in his mid-twenties who, over his first few months on testosterone, heads to the local convenience store in San Francisco to pick up tampons each month he still has his period.
During his first trip to the corner store, he meets Phoebe (she/her), the sociable cashier who is pleasantly surprised and intrigued at the scene she perceives: A man secure enough to buy tampons for his girlfriend? In the heat of the moment, Kirby doesn’t correct her.
As Kirby starts making regular trips to the corner store, Devin (they/them), his best friend and roommate, picks up on Kirby’s interest in this mini-mart girl. With their encouragement, will Kirby tell Phoebe the truth? And if he does, how will she react?
This story is:
- A meet-cute between two individuals that audiences might not expect to be drawn together romantically
- A facet of one trans person’s experience with gender-affirming hormone therapy
- A comedy about life’s inconveniences and deciding to take them in stride — as Kirby is known to say, “It is what it is”
- A reminder to let yourself indulge in a really good bag of chips
- A film about embracing yourself and making the choice to not run away, but instead let others in
The Characters
Kirby is played by Eisa Al-Shamma (they/them)
Phoebe is played by Amy Stringer (she/her)
Devin is played by Edna Mira Raia (she/her)
Pre-Production and Production
The screenplay evolved from first draft (written fall 2020) to filming through many stages of edits, including in-depth consultation with trans and non-binary folks, improv sessions with the actors, professional script and character consulting sessions with actor/consultant Samy Figadero (he/they) and actor/consultant Vittorio Wyatt Gray (he/him), long discussions with Eisa about Kirby, and a dedicated creative partnership between writer/director Alex Greenspan (she/her) and producer/assistant director Haley Baldwin (she/her).
“(In)convenience” had a whirlwind summer, starting pre-production at the beginning of June 2022 and filming over three days at the end of July. Alex and Haley assembled an incredible, majority LGBTQIA+ crew that was professional, respectful, and whose kindness and expertise made the on-set experience full of joyous moments. Director of Photography Aja Pop (she/her) led an amazing camera team, Production Designer Samantha Alexa (she/they) brought the characters and their world to life, and Field Sound Mixer PJ Shulsky (he/him) captured crisp sound through the whole shoot. The film successfully wrapped production at 4am PDT on August 2nd!
