Early last week our 5 year old kitty Momo showed little interest in eating or drinking and seemed a bit lethargic. We quickly brought her to our family vet where she was diagnosed with an infection of her uterus, she was kept overnight and had an emergency spay the next day (which was more expensive than the avg spay due to the circumstances. ~$600) The vet kept her one extra night for observation and gave her clearance to come home the next day.
On Friday, 24 hours after returning home from her surgery, she became lethargic again. By the next morning, her gums and nose had turned almost white, she wouldn't eat, kept trying to hide under the blankets and showed signs of sudden muscle weakness.
Our only option was to take her to our nearest emergency vet where she continued to deteriorate, they diagnosed her with probable Immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) triggered by the stress from the surgical procedure.
They had to run multiple tests to confirm these results and rule out any other causes like Dormant Feline Leukemia, Sepsis, Hemorrhage, etc. which was already $750 worth of tests. The results confirmed the diagnosis and so they got to work on a treatment plan.
The final plan involved a blood transfusion, minimum two nights of boarding for regular blood tests, steroids to prevent the immune system from attacking her blood cells, Benadryl to prevent adverse reaction to the blood transfusion as well as a broad spectrum antibiotic to fight any lingering bacteria from her surgery that might cause sepsis, and a pancreatic lipase to check for pancreatitis (her blood work showed that this might also pose an issue.)
At the end of it all, we thankfully prevented our young cat from passing away, but we're now staring down an emergency vet bill that will cost us 2,150.67 due to such a rare surgical complication. We have very little means to pay this bill as my mom was just laid off from her job (and my only income is SSI) so any help would be appreciated.
