Mark Revolutionized the game of basketball, with that deep step back 3 point jump shot, which made him the once stand out star at Eastern Commerce Collegiate, abs was the motivation
Life takes us on several journeys, sadly today Marks current journey is off the court and consisting of the fight of his life, literally".
In speaking to Mark today (October 23, 2021), it was so heart wrenching to hear the words, “ I feel tired, frustrated, sad, facing what I want to do versus what I can do, I’m constantly in pain, learning to walk again, using a cane, since graduating from a walker, not feeling well at any point of the day, facing the fact that all abilities to be myself have changed, I have no more laughter and always feel serious as there’s nothing to be happy about.
Mark expressed that previous to now he hadn’t told anyone, but that he has been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, Congestive Heart Failure and Kidney failure. There are the 3 worst forms of this dreaded disease Cancer which are treatable but not curable, and Multiple Myelomas one of them. Earlier this year, Mark first started to feel not himself, very tired, unable to walk normally, difficulty walking and always felt weak and the close possibility of falling in each step, shortness of breath became normal.
Then It happened, on June 5, 2021, he experienced the closest call with death. Normal hemoglobin should be 100 and over, Marks reading was 18/19! The medical team believed it was impossible to live on this reading, and even more shocked that he survived the week following. It was a miracle. Mark admits he had felt ill prior to June 5th and ignored it for a couple of days, hoping it would pass, it only go worse. He was stalling due to fear. The sick and weak feelings got worst and worst and he soon lost all mobility. I first was seen at Toronto Western Hospital, second Toronto General Hospital and finally a concise diagnosis was confirmed at Princess Margaret Hospital, following a severely declined oxygen level. Father of 6 children ranging in ages from 26-11, Mark and his family are praying for a recovery and support to afford treatment to prolong his life. Currently Mark has chemo therapy twice weekly, receives and abdominal needle once weekly and takes 15 pills daily to sustain life. These prescriptions are not covered by healthcare, and have become unaffordable. Amanda, Marks other half and mother to his fifth and sixth children, has shared with us what an amazing man and father that he is, staying positive and supportive of the family while he is in the biggest fight of his life. She admits that its really hard to see him struggle as shes use to his happy and positive demeanor. Her family dream of course is that this would never be happening and that he could be back to himself enjoying life again. the closest to this would be for him to afford the treatment to keep him as healthy as possible and with his family. Everything has changed since the devasting news as this once go lucky guy fell ill. Knowing this type of cancer isn’t curable Mark still stays optimistic as he knows that the treatment can prolong his life and give his family more time with him.
Please join us to help Mark with this fight, please donate all you can and share this fundraiser as we would like to help pay for current costly treatment and help alleviate the financial burdens that this family, including Marks worries right now.
