Hey, time to start up a regular progressive but contrarian newsletter again to cover this dramatic run up to the 2020 election. I did this for a few months in 2016 but could not sustain the work for time and budgetary reasons.
Now, I am starting up again and I have decided to ask for some simple monetary support so I can pay some part-time researchers. At least one!
There has never been a more appropriate time for strong and fearless truth tellers. Not only is our government run by a crime family, but the very basis of our democracy hangs in the balance. Meanwhile, with few exceptions, the traditional media --rife with economic worries and inherent biases-- is collapsing. Just as alarming, many of the independent web-based alternative media are being snapped up by private equity groups and getting shut down or hemmed in politically.
I have been very successful in building a huge Facebook gathering of some 8,000 followers but FB is a problematic platform nowadays. Posts get taken down by Zuck's robots, trolls disrupt comment threads and distribution is limited by invisible and unknowable formulas.
My wish is to move most of my writing to this newsletter which will be distributed the old fashioned way, through email!
In case, you don't know me, I am a retired journalist and a retired USC Journalism Professor with 45 years of global experience. I have written three non fiction books including the LATimes best-seller Pinochet And Me: A Chilean Anti-Memoir. I have been a contributing editor to The Nation magazine since 1995. I was a special global correspondent for the Village Voice in its heyday, My work has appeared in dozens of venues from the Los Angeles Times to The New Yorker, Harper's, The Atlantic, Rolling Stone, LA Weekly, The Guardian, CBS News and PBS Frontline just to name a few. When at USC I founded and directed its digital news outlet Neon Tommy that became the most-visited university web site in America.
I was a founding advisor to The Huffington Post where I later served as Senior Editor and editorial director of its 2007-08 citizen campaign reporting project Off The Bus.
As a young man in the early 70's I was a translator for Chilean President Salvador Allende and was able to escape Chile in September 1973, eight days after the coup.
I believe I bring a fresh, often biting, take on current events. My roots are in 60's activism but I am NOT a PC robot or a knee-jerk liberal. I come from a democratic socialist background long before most people ever heard the term. As far as I am concerned, everybody and everything is a fair target for scrutiny. I am as likely to skewer the Venezuelan government as I am critical of the US State Dept. I have NO sacred cows and you can never be sure where I am going to land on any given issue.
For the last 10 years I have refused most ideological labels as they have generally been corrupted. I prefer to say that in lieu of a political dogma, I simple adhere to core principles: more democracy, more quality, more transparency.
NOTE: A small monthly contribution from you will help me sustain what should be a once-weekly (or more) newsletter from me on the stories of the day. Along with my take I will also provide some good links, and maybe some occasional photos from the Pacific Northwest where I now live or from other places around the world I visit ( I am a professional AMATEUR photographer). Larger contributions are of course welcome. I am setting an initial goal of $10,000 a year to pay for a part-time assistant and maybe some travel (thinking about going to Iowa in February for the caucuses). Wanna help?
If I don't meet my goal, well, I will still produce what I can with whatever resources. I hope to begin publication by Thanksgiving if not before. Join us! We have a world to gain.
